September Brown Bag Lunch in Pearl

     Join us at the Pearl Library this Friday at 12:00 for our Brown Bag Luncheon. Anne Martin from WXVT in Greenville, MS will join us and will be telling stories about growing up in the Delta.
     Anne is the Assistant News Director, and she also anchors and produces the Delta Daybreak each day at 5:30 a.m. We're so excited to have her here with us, and we hope you'll come out and join us!
     The program runs from 12:00-1:00 p.m. You're encouraged to bring your own lunch, and you can also enjoy some of the light refreshments provided by the Friends of the Pearl Library.

Fluff n' Fudge Book Club @ Brandon

We had a killer (pun intended) time at this week's Fluff n' Fudge Book Club as we discussed The Legs Murder Scandal by Hunter Cole. This chilling account resurrects the story of Ouida Keeton, a.k.a. "Mississippi's Lizzie Borden". The story that rocked 1935 Laurel, MS has been largely forgotten. If you missed it, click here to request a copy!

Now as for the fudge, it was simply to die for (again, pun intended). Here is the recipe for Killer Crack Peanut Butter Fudge. Enjoy!

3 cups sugar

3/4 cup butter

2/3 cup evaporated milk

1 cup JIF peanut butter

1 7oz. jar marshmallow creme

1 tsp. vanilla

Combine sugar, butter, and evaporated milk in a heavy 2 1/2 quart saucepan. Bring to a full boil, stirring constantly. Continue boiling over medium heat for 5 minutes, stirring constantly to prevent scorching. Remove from heat. Add the peanut butter, stirring until melted. Add marshmallow creme and vanilla; beat until well blended.

Spread in a buttered 9x13x2 inch pan. Cool at room temperature, then refrigerate. Cut into squares when firm.

Craft Night

We had a great time at craft night making our Fall wreaths! Word of advice: wrapping a wreath with yarn takes quite some time. But it's also therapeutic, and the end result is this lovely fall decoration (or accessory... they look good as a hat or a very large bangle). Celebrate the freedom to read! The last day of September marks Banned Books Week, so naturally, we're going to participate. Select any title that has been banned for this month's Chapter One Book Club. We will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, September 13 @ the Pearl Public Library.

Simply Crafts @ Pearl



It's that time again! The kids are back in school, our regular TV shows are back on, summer is over, and FALL is almost here! You should celebrate it by decorating your house with a lovely fall wreath. Don't have one? You're in luck! We're making them at Pearl Public Library's craft night this Tuesday, September 11 @ 6 p.m. All materials are free, and the program is open to the public. We hope to see you there!

Fine Forgiveness Week

Local Libraries to Forgive Student Fines and Assist Community

The Central Mississippi Regional Library System (CMRLS) wants to make your students’ school year a successful one. To assist with this goal, CMRLS libraries are declaring a Fine Forgiveness Week, September 8-15. During this week anyone 21 years or younger may clear their library fines and start the school year with a ‘clean slate’. Those already out of school may also clear fines. Fines will only continue to follow them and cause future problems. Borrowing materials for upcoming school projects or just leisure reading will no longer be a worry.   

Students, or any person age 21 and younger, who have overdue library materials in good condition may return them to the library during Fine Forgiveness Week and fines will be forgiven. It is that easy! In addition, by returning the materials, students just coming into those same school projects will have the needed resources. Due to the economic situation everyone is facing, replacing those needed materials are sometimes beyond library budgets. Books cost more each year to purchase.

If for some reason those overdue library materials are lost or the items have been damaged, anyone 21 years and younger may still be granted Fine Forgiveness! The Library will accept one sealed, multi-serving packaged food item for each $10 in fines that the borrower owes. This will erase the library fine and at the same time contribute to the Mississippi Food Network working in your community. Your library and the library’s website have a list of accepted items for fine forgiveness. The list includes items such as peanut butter, fruit cups, pudding cups, and snack crackers.

Central Mississippi Regional Library System serves the public libraries of Rankin, Scott, Simpson, and Smith counties. The libraries are located in Pearl, Flowood, Brandon, Puckett, Pelahatchie, Florence, Reservoir, Richland, and Sandhill; Forest, Morton, Sebastopol, and Lake; Magee, Mendenhall, and Harrisville; Mize, Polkville, Raleigh, and Taylorsville. Hours, contact information, and a list of accepted food items are found at www.cmrls.lib.ms.us. The library nearest to you may be listed in the local phone book in the “city section”, the yellow pages, or by name. Library staff can answer any questions regarding Fine Forgiveness Week. Fees produced by Debt Collect will not be forgiven.

All CMRLS Libraries will be closed by 6:00 p.m. this evening, Tuesday, August 28. The Libraries will remain closed Wednesday, August 29, due to anticipated severe weather. Library programs are cancelled.

Brown Bag @ Pearl

Join us for this month's Brown Bag lunch, Friday, August 24 (noon) featuring Mississippi poet, Patricia Neely-Dorsey. She'll be discussing her books, Reflections of a Mississippi Magnolia and My Magnolia Memories and Musings. Bring a sack lunch. Drinks and dessert are provided by the Friends of the Pearl Library.

Patricia Neely-Dorsey is  a 1982 graduate of Tupelo High School in Tupelo, Mississippi.  She  received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts. After living for almost 20 years in Memphis, Tennessee, working in the mental health field, she returned to her   hometown in August 2007. 

Her  first book of poetry, Reflections of a Mississippi Magnolia- A Life In Poems was published in February, 2008 (Grant House Publishers).Her second book , My Magnolia Memories and Musings -In Poems was published in February 2012. She calls both books"a celebration of the south and things southern ". Patricia  currently live in Tupelo with her  husband James,son Henry,and Miniature Schnauzer, Happy. She is an avid reader and passionate writer. The author  considers  herself  a "Goodwill Ambssador" for Mississippi and hopes to promote a positive image of Mississippi , rather than all the negatives usually portrayed.

Craft night @ Pearl

Here's a look at what we did at craft night this past Tuesday:

Everyone was pleased with their felt flowers!

We only had a couple of hot glue gun injuries, but no one had to be hospitalized. The flowers, as suggested by some, could be pinned on a shirt or made into a headband. Some gave it away as a gift. If you would like to join the craft night fun, just stop by the Pearl library every 2nd Tuesday @ 6 p.m.

Simply Crafts @ Pearl

If you love to do crafts, you should come to this month's Simply Crafts @ the Pearl Public Library this Tuesday, August 14 @ 6 p.m. We will be making felt flower pins similar to the one shown above. This program is free with all materials provided, and EVERYONE is welcome. We hope to see you there!

The crafters were really creative with their materials! We had sequins, scrap book paper, foam hearts, regular and puffy paint. And our newcomers from last month's craft night came back! (Yay!) We also gained a couple more crafters which is fantastic! Everyone is welcome back next month as well as anyone else who likes crafts. We'll see you next month!

Would you like to search on your own? You can look at the same tools that library staff use.

• Need help with the new catalog? Ask staff how to search by author, title, subject, or do keyword searches for genre, setting, or even limit the publication date to the last one or two years. You can also make lists of books that you may want to check out later or lists of books you've read, directly from the catalog.
  
• NoveList is a great tool in finding "something good to read". You do need your Library Card barcode number to sign in, but after that you can look around, search by title, genre, or author. 
• From the same screen you can check to see if your Library has the book, see books that are similar, read about the author, even read reviews and link to GoodReads. Use GoodReads to write your own review of books that you've read so other patrons can see what you liked or didn't like! CMRLS Libraries has it's own GoodReads page. Feel free to "friend" us and comment!

Chapter One Book Club @ Pearl
