February Programs at the Pearl Public Library Never Disappoint.

From a great read to Bingo for Books to a Costume Pizza Party, and more, it's all happening at the Pearl Library! And, it's all FREE!

In honor of Library Lover's Month, the Chapter 1 Book Club will be discussing Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers on Tues. Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. This book club meets every second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. No reservation or membership required. Just stop on by! They'll be happy to see you!

If a book club isn't your thing, come on by the library on this same night Feb. 12 for this month's Family Night program. It's a Costume Pizza Party with pizza provided by Pizza Shack of Jackson. It's first come first served! So, hurry on in and yes, any costume will do!

Or, how about a good game of Bingo!

 It's Bingo for Books on Thurs. Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. This program was brought back by popular demand. And, it is oh-so-popular! Bingo for Books is every second Thursday of the month at 6 p.m.

By the way, plan to come back the next Thursday for Third Thursday Flicks on Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m. Watch The Notebook on the big screen and enjoy complimentary popcorn and drinks!

A "Daughter's" Life of Love, Pain, Forgiveness and Healing! Talk About It At the Pearl Public Library!

It's another good read at the Pearl Public Library! Amy's next Chapter 1 Book Club meeting, which is on Tues. July 10 at 6 p.m., is sure to spark emotional conversation!

Her Daughter’s Dream by Francine Rivers spans from the 1950s to present day. It’s about destructive familial sorrows, and the forgiveness that heals even the worst of pains.

    

In a situation that would make life tough for anyone, little Carolyn Arundel sure didn’t have life easy.  For a time her mother Hildemara (Hildie) was quarantined to her bedroom with tuberculosis during which time Carolyn’s grandmother Marta was there to help. Carolyn forms a special bond with her grandmother that she thinks caused tensions between Hildie and Marta.

   

Well, Hildie gets better and goes back to work which allowed Marta to return to her home. This was during the Cold War when fear was rampant throughout the world, and it was a time when Carolyn and her brother, as latchkey kids, fended for themselves.

   

Time goes on and Carolyn sees college as an opportunity to find herself. When a family tragedy threatens her independence, she doesn’t go home but rather cuts all ties and escapes into the nonconforming culture of San Francisco. Two years later she returns home to rebuild a life for her and her daughter May Flower Dawn.

   

As often is the case, history repeats itself, and May Flower Dawn forms a special relationship with her grandmother Hildie. Another kink between generations ensues. But, May Flower Dawn wants to do everything possible to avoid the same mistakes of the past. Her aim is to be a stepping stone in her family to build relationships and not a stumbling  block that separates.

   

Her Daughter’s Dream is the conclusion to the New York Times best seller Her Mother’s Hope. Author Francine Rivers, in this final chapter about mothers’ sacrifices for their daughters, illustrates the amazing essence of unconditional love.

Stop By the Pearl Library, Swap Howdies with a Staffer during National Library Week and Win a Sweet Treat!

April is a big month for libraries everywhere. That's when National Library Week is celebrated. This year it's April 8 -14 with the theme "Libraries Lead."  

You know what? Libraries as leaders is nothing new! 

You see, back in 1958 is when the first National Library Week was observed by the American Library Association (ALA).  

This is how it came about. Back in the 1950s folks were spending less time on reading books. Yep, they were into radio, television and music, especially musical instruments. Well, that really got the attention of the ALA and the American Book Publishers. They formed a nonprofit citizens organization called the National Book Committee in 1954.

Let me tell you this committee had some big goals that ranged from encouraging people to use their leisure time to read to "improving incomes and health" and "developing strong and happy family life." 

See what I mean? Libraries as important role models for communities has been part of libraries' goals and accomplishments for years!

In 1957 a plan was developed for National Library Week in an effort to motivate people to read so that they would support and use libraries. In 1958 sporting the theme "Wake Up and Read!", the first National Library Week was observed.  National Library Week was observed again in 1959 and continued yearly. When the National Book Committee disbanded in 1974, the ALA assumed the lead sponsorship.

At the Pearl Library, the goal is to make National Library Week very special. So, in an effort to get patrons connected not only to the Pearl Library, but to library staffers, Amy, the adult program coordinator, has come up with a sweet, great way to do that! 

Oh, yes! Come on in and introduce yourself to a staffer April 9 -13, write the staffer's name on a slip of paper provided for you and get a sweet treat in return.

So What Does Love Really Have To With It? A Lot this Library Lovers' Month at the Pearl Public Library!

    Yes, February is Library Lovers' Month, and it's a time that the Pearl Public Library staff and their patrons have a real love fest! This is the 10-year anniversary of the library's Come In From the Cold With a Good Book program that offers the patrons free cookies, donuts and coffee.
   The program will run for three days on Tuesday, Feb. 13 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 14 (VALENTINE'S DAY!) from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.!
    It's a must participate in event when the library transforms the front entrance into a lovely cafe complete with a huge Community Coffee bar and wonderful donuts and cookies. It's a free program with all goodies donated by Community Coffee, Dunkin Donuts, The Donut Factory, Sam's of Pearl, Walmart of Pearl, Simply Southern and That Special Touch. Thanks so much to our business partners!
   The program, also sponsored by the Friends of the Pearl Library,  serves as a Friends membership drive. There will be Friends members on hand to answer questions and take membership applications. Donations to the Friends will, of course, be happily accepted.
    But, that's not all the library has going on this month!
    On Thursday, Feb. 15, while you are getting your sweet tooth and caffeine on, Amy, the reference supervisor in charge of all adult programming says save room for some Chinese food treats starting at 6 p.m.

     That's right. It's a Chinese New Year celebration with speaker the Reverend Linda Smith, a former missionary in China. There will also be some tasty Chinese food sampling. So, come and get it while supplies last! It's free!
      Speaking of free, special programs...

      ...starting tonight Simply Crafts, led by Becky, will merge with the Crochet Group. That's every first Tuesday of the month, from 5:30 to 7:30. Two fun times in one. Can't beat that with stick!
       There's something for everyone. How about a good book?! One can always be found with the Chapter 1 Book Club, led by Amy!
         

      This month's book is Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. The book club is free and meets every second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m.

Hopping, Popping, Gardening And Mysteries, BINGO! It Must Be April and National Library Week At the Pearl Library! OH YEEAAAH!

     National Library Week 2017 runs from April 9 -15, with the theme Libraries Transform. That has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?  Libraries DO transform. They transform people. They transform communities.  Libraries offer so much! Like what, you ask? During the entire month of April, the lineup of events at the Pearl Public Library will transform and amaze. Ready?  Here we go!
     When it comes to adult programming in April, just follow Amy's trail. She says, when you hippity hop right into the library during April; tell us why you visited and get entered into a drawing for a sweet prize. The drawing will be Monday, May 1st. 

      Monday April 10th is NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK KICKOFF - from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., come to the library and fill out a survey and tellus how we can improve our services. You'll be entered into a drawing scheduled the very next day, April 11th, and the chance to win a cool prize.  Now, that's not all that's happening on this day!

    The Tuesday of every annual National Library Week is set to honor librarians. It's called NATIONAL LIBRARY WORKERS' DAY.  You probably already know how ridiculously awesome the Pearl Library staff is, don't you? Of course you do! Sooo, from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. We want you to stop by the library, enjoy a snack and tell us why your favorite librarian is a star.

   Drum roooooollll please. This one is a biggie!  The Friends of the Pearl Library along with the Chapter 1 Book Club present award-winning, local mystery and suspense writer, John M. Floyd. Uh-huh. Right here on Tuesday April 11th at 6 p.m. Patsy, the Chapter 1 Book Club facilitator has a fine program set up. John will talk about this latest book, Dreamland and sign books. The program is free. There will be light refreshments and door prizes.

    Hopping right along, Bingo for Books is Thursday April 13th at 6 p.m. Celebrate National Library Week with a game of Bingo and a chance to win your choice of a variety of books.

Whew! All this hopping has me feeling a little hungry. Oh great! We have that covered too. Free POPCORN! On Friday, April 14th end National Library Week with free popcorn from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Come by and meet your library staff. We will be serving up this wonderful treat! Can you dig it? Sure you can!

Speaking of digging, there's nothing bunnies love more than carrots! YUM-O! Covvverrred! Yes, Amy's Simply Crafts - free adult program - will be making Easter Carrots Rice Krispie Treats at 6 p.m. on Thurs. April 20. No reservation is required and all ingredients supplied!  

Well, maybe you are into a different type of digging. It is that time of year when gardening is becoming the center of attention. Wouldn't you know that the Pearl Library has a great program to help you out. The Rankin County Master Gardeners will be at the library on Thursday April 27th at 6 p.m. to share expert gardening tips. All free. 

Really impressive stuff going on at the Pearl Library! All programs are free! You don't want to miss out on anything.

GO MAD FOR ART AT THE PEARL LIBRARY!

They say, "A picture is worth a thousand words".  WOW! That means there will be a whole lotta words flying around (and not just from all the books) at the Pearl Library. Artwork created by Pearl School District students will grace our library  during the entire month of March.   It all begins today, and in a wink, art will be everywhere. It will be as if, during March, the library transforms into an art gallery. This is a very special time for art students culminating in the Youth Art Month Reception on Tuesday, March 28th from 5:00 pm until 6:30 pm, when hundreds of patrons, including proud family and friends, converge at the library to view the students' art. Refreshments will be provided.

If art is not your thing, then hoops might be. Amy says, come show it! That's right! March Madness...basketball RULES!!  So, she says how's about coming on into the Pearl Library, anytime during the month of March, and filling out an entry listing which basketball team you are cheering for. Oh, yeah, it's that simple to get entered for a chance to win a great prize!! The drawing will take place on Friday, March 31st.

So, that takes care of events which include the whole month of March. Now, there are those special 'one night only' events like the one Amy has planned for Thursday, March 9th at 6:00 pm, The Center for Violence Prevention will present a program discussing issues of domestic abuse or violence. It's a free program and no registration is required.

Patsy's Chapter 1 Book Club March selection is Predator by Terry Blackstock. This month's meeting is Tuesday, March 14th at 6 pm. No reservation or membership is required. There will be door prizes and light refreshments.

Amy has a lucky Simply Crafts program this month on Thursday, March 16th at 6:00 pm. The group will be making beautiful paper Shamrocks. No reservation is needed. All materials supplied.

A MONTH WORTH LOVING AT THE PEARL LIBRARY!

     If it's February, then it must be Library Lovers' Month! If it's Library Lovers' Month, then it's the Pearl Public Library's time to shine! Oh yeah, baby! It's one of the most fun and sweet programs the library hosts all year. This is the Ninth Annual Come In From the Cold With a Good Book on Valentine's Day February 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m and Wednesday, Feb. 15 from 9 a.m . to 5:30 p.m. 
     Patrons will be treated to free coffee, donated by Community Coffee and free donuts and cookies donated by Pearl businesses - Walmart, Dunkin Donuts, Donut Factory, Sam's Club and That Special Touch Cakes and Flowers and Simply Southern Cafe and Grill in Flowood. The main entrance to the library will be transformed into a sweet cafe! Seriously, now. Do you really want to miss out on this?! I didn't think so!  Come in and enjoy the decorations and treats!

    While you are at the library any time during the month of February, write a couple of words telling why you love the library. Your entry will go into a Library Lovers' Month drawing to be held on March 1 for one sweet prize! Amy will be sure to take care of that!

      There's more. Amy has a Valentine's Day Strawberry Sugar Scrub for you lovely people that want to help your skin stay moist and smooth. Uh-huuuuuuuh! Amy's free, Simply Crafts group will be making this scrub on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. No reservation is needed and all materials are supplied! Remember, Simply Crafts is every third Thursday of the month at 6 p.m.

      Another Valentine's Day highlight is Patsy's Chapter 1 Book Club meeting at 6 p.m. on Feb. 14. Their book selection is Buried Secrets, the second book in the Heart of the Amazon Series by Margaret Daley. It's a free book club. No registration is required. There will be light refreshments and door prizes. The Chapter 1 Book Club meets every second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m.

A Can't-Miss Electrifying Event!

That's right folks! Right here at the Pearl Public Library, Amy has the answer to your New Year's resolution to save money. Yep! You know that pesky, high electric bill that just WON'T QUIT?! Every time you look at the bill it just makes you want to faint.
Well then, you absolutely do not want to miss out on the library's energy saving tips program, featuring the Entergy Company, on Thurs. Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. It's a free, adult program.

That's definitely a highlight program of the month, but don't forget about the Pearl Library's popular monthly events too!  Patsy's Chapter 1 Book Club (which meets the second Tuesday of every month) selected Cop Town by Karin Slaughter for their Tues. Jan. 10 group discussion. The book club is free. No reservation or membership required. And, as always, there will be a door prize and light refreshments! 

Two women struggling to be good cops in Atlanta in the 1970s, find themselves up against extraordinary heat. Oh yeah! Now, that's a book you can grab a nice mug of Joe or cocoa and snuggle up with, right? Right!!! 

Speaking of mugs, don't miss January's Simply Crafts! Amy has just the right craft in store on Thurs. Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. "You decorate ceramic mugs with a a paint pen," Amy said. "Then you place them in a low oven to set them and prevent them from bleeding. Really cool idea!" Indeed, Amy. It sure is!!! Simply Crafts meets every third Thursday of the month. But there's plenty of warm and cozy going on at the Pearl Public Library? 
For starters, Amy has hooked you up with Snuggle Up and Read for two whole months! Whoa! This wonderful, adult program should put some fire into your reading! Read any books you like. Write a short book review for each book. Each book review is an entry 
into a drawing for a cozy throw and hot chocolate basket to be held on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Now, that's pretty darn classy!!!

Bet ya feelin' a little toasty already!!!!  Well, there's more... It's the season for all things magical and bright, and Patsy, the Chapter 1 Book Club leader, has just the right thing. A Season of Angels by Debbie Macomber is the December selection.  That's Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 6 p.m. There will be light refreshments and door prizes. You don't have to be a member and no registration required for this free adult program.

What's the holidays without decorations?! No way! Bring on the decorations! And, that's what Amy has selected as her December Simply Crafts offering for Thursday December 15 at 6 p.m. ! No registration required and all materials are supplied! Beautiful Mason Jar Lid Tree Ornaments! Simply made ornaments can't be beat!

Great Adult Programming Is Always In Season!

       The Adult Summer Reading Program season may be over, but great programming is always on tap at the Pearl Public Library! 
         Check out the August lineup!!!
         All month long, you can enter to win a prize by simply telling us who's your favorite inventor. Double your chances by checking out a book about an inventor and get entered again!  The drawing for a winner will be September 1.

      Mondays just got more instructional at the library!  It's Computer Hour power! That's right. Need a little basic help with computers?  Well, every Monday, from 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. the reference staff will offer basic computer instruction while you are either already using the public computers or come in specifically for basic instruction.  It's free and no reservation is required.

      Need a little color in your life?! Then this adult program is for YOU!!! Coloring and Conversation, Thurs. Aug. 4 at 2 p.m. Bring your own coloring book or use one of our coloring sheets! There's also a door prize! Don't miss it!!!

       Ahhhh, who doesn't love a classic! Little Women by Louisa May Alcott! That's the August Chapter 1 Book Club selection. Don't miss out on Tues. Aug. 9 at 6 p.m. No membership or reservation needed. There will be light refreshments and door prizes.

         Ever think about your thumbprint being creative? Well, just see how it can make pretty butterfly wings during Simply Crafts on Thurs. Aug. 18 at 6 p.m.  Transform an ordinary flower pot into a work of art!

         Diabetes is a serious illness. It's so important to keep abreast of information that could help prevent or help you cope with diabetes! That's why this free, adult program, A 'Fresh' View on Your Diabetes, on Thurs. Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. is a must attend!  Magnolia Health is offering a free class on the causes of diabetes and how to manage the disease. All attendees will be gifted a free book entitled: A Fresh Approach to Diabetes by health education, award winning author, Michelle Bain, and a cookbook of healthy recipes. 

    So, you have to admit.  The Pearl Public Library's August adult programming is just awesome and worth visiting your local library!  Come on in and enjoy all the free programs the library has to offer!

There's More Than The Heat Sizzlin' At The Pearl Library!

   That's Right! Great adult programming continues all through the month of July at the Pearl Public Library!
   Take Me Out To The Library runs all month long. Come by the library and get your reading baseball field sheet that marks out bases. Read four books and make it to home base. Return the field sheet to be entered to win tickets to a Mississippi Braves home game. The winner will be chosen on Monday, Aug. 1.

    Chapter 1 Book Club gives a salute to its homeland with Indestructible: The Unforgettable Story of a Marine by Jack Lucas. That's on Tuesday, July 12 at 6 p.m. No reservation is required. There will be door prizes and light refreshments!

    Get transported to the beach with this month's Simply Crafts! Painted Starfish and Seashell picture frames on Thursday, July 21 at 6 p.m. No reservation is needed and all materials are supplied.

    What's more relaxing than drawing?! You'll get a chance to do just that in this special From Doodles to Designs drawing group program on Thursday, July 28 at 4 p.m.  No reservation is needed!

CHAPTER 1 TAKES A RIDE "OVER THE HILL" AT PEARL!

The Pearl Library's Chapter 1 Book Club will discuss  Out to Pasture, But Not Over the Hill, a book in the FairAcres retirement home series by Effie Leland Wilder on Thurs. March 10 at 6 p.m.

The book is full of funny stories for easy, entertaining reading. That's really no surprise since Wilder was a late bloomer, publishing her first book at 85! By then a person probably has a pretty solid, healthy perspective and can see the humor in life!

In Out to Pasture, Hattie McNair may be in a retirement home, but she's not retired from life! As she writes to a friend, Hattie tells the stories of other residents in the FairAcres retirement home and the blessings that come along with aging. 

In this inspirational story, residents of FairAcres come together to help a handyman that can't read or write. Their lives are changed as well as the handyman's to say the least. Out to Pasture leaves the reader knowing that no matter the age, a life lived long and well is something to be proud of, and that you are never too old to make an impact on the people all around you!

Wilder was born Aug. 28, 1909 in Rockingham, N.C. She died July 19, 2007 in Summerville, S.C.  She was 97. She lived her life mainly as a homemaker until she turned author later in life.  She authored five books.  

Quite the humanitarian, Wilder served on the Board of Directors for Lowcountry Red Cross, Summerville Meals on Wheels, the Timrod Library and the Dorchester Library. 

Wow! Someone like that should have her own day! That's exactly what South Carolina Governor, Jim Hodges, did! He proclaimed Aug. 28,2001, as Effie Wilder Day.

CHAPTER 1 BOOK CLUB GIVES A SALUTE TO WWII IN PEARL!

The theme for  January's Chapter 1 Book Club, at the Pearl Public Library, is "People from WWII" honoring men and women who lived during World War II.  Choose any biography from that time, and come share your thoughts!

That's Thurs. Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. You don't have to reserve a spot. You don't even have to be a member. Just come on by and join in the discussion! As always there will be door prizes and light refreshments.

SOFT LOVE LEADS THIS CHAPTER 1 BOOK CLUB IN PEARL!

Janette Oke (pronounced  - oak ), born Feb 18, 1935 in Canada, is a Christian fiction writer. She reportedly pioneered inspirational fiction. 

Love Comes Softly was Oke's first novel which was published in 1979 and sold over a million copies. She is now the bestselling author of more than 70 books that have sold millions of copies. 

The Chapter 1 Book Club will discuss Love Comes Softly, the first in the Love Comes Softly three-book series, at the Pearl Public Library's Thurs. Dec. 3 book club meeting at 6 p.m. 

The novel - an inspirational romance - is set in the pioneer era where Oke's books are often situated.   Marty Claridge didn't see it coming. She was happy, newly married and totally in love with her husband Clem. As a good wife does, she followed her husband's lead to the West where a new life would prove promising. Before poor Clem could even stake a land claim, he was sadly killed in a freak accident. Marty was devastated. What on earth was she going to do in this new territory and with no family around?  Well, it just so happens that a widower by the name of Clark Davis was desperately needing a mother for his daughter Missie. The day of Clem's funeral, Clark made a proposal to Marty. She stays, marries him in name only and be a mother to his child. In return, he would provide for her through the winter. Come spring, if she's still wanting to head back home, he would pay her way there if she took Missie with her. Read the book for the rest of the story as the saying goes!!!!
