 Read Across America

In 1998, the National Education Association (NEA) launched Read Across America, the nation's largest celebration of reading.  This year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read.  The NEA offers a list of titles and resources which reflect students' interests, as well as introduce them to new places and characters that could be different from their own.

Read Across America Day is celebrated on March 2, which is the birthday of Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. Most schools celebrate on the school day closest to March 2, while community centers, libraries, and museums may celebrate over the entire week. During this time, teachers, librarians, and students everywhere will wear tall striped top hats and red ties.  They will read books about a cat who is not quite cut out to be a babysitter, or possibly an elephant who saves a teeny, tiny town.

Theodor Geisel is most known for his children's books, but he worked as a commercial illustrator for almost twenty years.  He worked on the FLIT insecticide advertising campaign, created political cartoons for the New Your newspaper, and illustrated posters for the U>S. government during World War II.  No matter the literary venue, it is hard to miss the distinct style in Theodor Geisel's work.

When Geisel did, in 991 Bob Chase, who was the NEA president at the time said, "we are calling for every child in every school in every community to be in the company of a book on Read Across America Day, in celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday."

In President Joe Biden's Read Across America Day Proclamation, he said, "The key to developing your learners into engaged, active and innovated thinkers is instilling in them a lobe of reading at an early age.  Reading is the gateway to countless skills and possibilities - it sets children on the path to a lifetime of discovery."

Help us celebrate Read Across America Day by stopping by your local library and checking out a book to read.  The CMRLS libraries have several special events planned for you to enjoy.

Harrisville: Dr. Seuss Birthday Party, March 1 at 4:30 p.m. This is a family program.

Flowood: Dr. Seuss Story Time and Butter Making, March 1 at 6:00 p.m. and March 5 at 1:00 p.m. This is a family program.

Raleigh:  Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss Story Time, March 1 at 11:00 a.m. This is a preschool program.

Forest:  Dr. Seuss Read Across America Celebration March 2 at 4:00 p.m. This program will be for children from Kindergarten age to fourth grade. 

Pearl:  Dr. Seuss Story Time, March 2 at 10:00 a.m. This is a preschool program. 

Pearl:  Dr. Seuss Story Time, March 2 at 4:00 p.m.  This program will be for children from kindergarten age to fourth grade.

Lake: Read Across America Story Time, March 2 at 10:30 a.m.  This program will be for preschool children.

Florence: Dr. Seuss Story Time, March 2 at 11:00 a.m. Preschool and March 3 at 4:00 p.m. for children kindergarten age to fourth grade.

Summer reading is still going strong! We still have a lot of fun online activities for all ages.

For adults, we have Blue Feather Bakery and fun crafts to make.

For Tweens/Teens, we have Who's Tail is it Anyway? Trivia.

We have lots of Preschool Story Times, the Hattiesburg Zoo, and the Mississippi Aquarium!

These are all great virtual events that you can enjoy as a family.

The Richland Library In June

 Starting Monday, June 7, 2021, Preschool Story Time is back.  Each week we will have books, songs, and a craft designed for children ages birth to preschool age.  At this time participants must register via the online calendar or inside the library. We are limiting each program to 30 minutes and 12 participants. The meeting room will be sanitized before and after each program.  

Monday, June 7th at 11:00 a.m. we will be reading books about watermelons and we will be making watermelons out of paper plates.  Click here to sign up for this program.

Brain Builders for Your Baby

Did you know that babies can hear their parents before they are even born?  They are learning even before they come out of the womb, so it is important to start talking and reading to them early on.  

Once your baby is born it is important to keep helping them with their brain development.  Add learning to any time of the day, no matter if it is at mealtime or bath time.  You can find conservation starters to help with vocabulary on any theme from being at the beach to discovering their own body at http://www.talkwithmebaby.org/start_a_conversation.

Find brain-building tips for ages 0 – 5 at https://www.vroom.org/.  This site is free and has an app you can download or get texts to your phone so that you can take these fun learning tips on the go.

The Brandon Library has tons of board books, lullaby cd’s, or learning DVD’s that you can check out for your precious little one to learn and grow.  You can even bring them to our Baby and Me storytime for ages 0 – 15 months on Mondays at 1 pm, Toddler storytime for ages 15 months – 2 years old on Mondays at 10:30 am, or Preschool storytime for ages 3 - 5 years old on Wednesday and Thursdays at 10:30 am.  

October 2019 Taylorsville Timeline To Do's

Outrageous October programming is coming to your Library in Taylorsville. Listed below are some of the October events we have planned for you to mark off of your To Do List.

October is the month we celebrate all things Teens with TeenTober. Here are some of the events we have coming up at the library here in Taylorsville.

For the entire month of October we invite Teens to come into the library and put your artistic twist on a bookmark and then step over to our YA area and put your mark on our table sized coloring page. On Wednesday, October 16th at 3:30 we will be dipping tiles to make marble-dipped coasters.

For our Magnolia Monday - Make & Take, Kindergarten to 6th grade children, we will be painting pumpkins on Monday, October 7th @ 3:30.

Each Wednesday at 11:00 am will be our Preschool Story Time.
Our Outrageous October themes are:

October 2nd:         Fall Leaves Fall

October 9th:          Boo! Said the Ghost

October 16th:        Halloween Upside Down?

October 23rd:        Paint a Pumpkin
October 30th:         All About Halloween

These preschool programs are filled with fun books, music, and crafts!

Our Adult and Senior Book Club meets on Tuesday, October 8th at 3:30. We will be discussing the various books our club members are reading. Since we all have different taste in the genre of books we read, we have a well-rounded discussion.

Our Friends of the Library Chapter invites you to join them on Tuesday, October 8th at 3:30, for their monthly meeting to discuss upcoming events and ways to help the library make them a success.

The week of October 20th to October 26th is Friends of the Library Week. The library staff will be hosting a reception on Tuesday, October 22nd at 2:00 to thank our current members for all they do for our library and welcome any new comers who would like to join our chapter here in Taylorsville.

All CMRLS libraries will be closed Monday, October 14th in observance of Columbus Day.

Merry March Events at the Morton Library

February has flown by, and so have our wonderful February programs. The kids really enjoyed making Valentine’s Day cards to send to hospitalized veterans. Below are just a few of the cards that were made.

If you missed our February programs, that is okay because the Morton Library has many fun and exciting events planned for everyone to enjoy.

As usual we have Preschool Story Time every Tuesday morning at 10:30. This month's themes are:

March 5th: Dr. Seuss

March 12th: St. Patrick's Day

March 19th: Rabbits

March 26th: Llamas

So, bring your little ones and join us for stories, music, and crafts!

March 4-9 is Teen Tech week and we will be participating by hosting an Engineering Challenge! During the challenge each team will be designing a tower made from dried spaghetti and marshmallows; the team who builds the tallest standing tower will win a small prize. The Engineering Challenge will be held March 7^th at 5:00 p.m.

March is also the birth month of beloved author Dr. Seuss, and we would like to celebrate with a birthday party. Join us March 14^th at 5:00 p.m. to celebrate Dr. Seuss with crafts and snacks!

Family Bingo Night is back by popular demand! Join us March 21^st at 5:00 p.m. to play the classic game of Bingo and win some prizes.

Remember our Library Lover’s Month gift basket drawing will be March 1^st, so come by and get your name in the drawing to win!

Mendenhall Library 's Upcoming Youth Programs in February

Story Time for February 2019 

     Mendenhall Library has Story Time every Thursday morning at 10 am. We love seeing our sweet preschooler's smiling faces, and their laughter is so contagious. They are always full of wonder about the theme for Story Time. Story Time is a great opportunity for preschoolers to interact with other preschoolers. We read stories, sing songs, dance, and make a craft to take home. All preschoolers are welcome to join in the fun. Here is a list of our Preschool Story Time dates and themes for February.

     February 7 theme is Dental Health Month. We are so excited that we will have a special speaker at Story Time. A local dental hygienist will explain to our preschoolers the proper way to brush their teeth, and also how important it is to do so. Below is one of the books I will read.

February 14 theme is "Will you be my Valentine?"
February 21 theme is "National Bird-Feeding Month!"
February 28 theme is "Once Upon a Time Fairy Tales!"

K-5 Program
     February 5 at 4 pm Kindergarten through 5th grade will be making homemade spinners. This will be a fun project so bring your friends.

Tween2Teen Program
     February 26 at 4 pm Rock painting. We will paint kind and inspirational quotes that the teens can give away or place somewhere for someone else to find.
