Brandon: International Game Week and Other November Tidbits

Even though National Game Week is November 3-9 this year, The Brandon Library will be playing games all month.  Monday, November 4 at 5 p.m. our middle graders and teens  (ages 10+) will be trying out the digital version of the Operation!  Tuesday, November 5 the Brandon Library will host Trivia Night at Lost Pizza at 6 p.m.

Saturday, November 9 we are hosting our Ultimate Escape Room! However, you can’t just come. You must have a golden ticket!  Stop by the library to find out how to get your ticket today!

Our regular Video Game day is November 16. We are playing Minecraft.  Even our Family Night on Monday November 18 at 6 pm will be a game and puzzle adventure.

If you happen to miss all these fun days, do not worry we will have puzzles, card games, and board games out for all ages!  If you do not like board games or puzzles, we always have the Wii set up in the children’s department.

Since we are a library, not everything is games and puzzles. Other fun includes:

•          Genealogy for Beginners on Thursday, November 14 at 6 p.m. and Tuesday, November 19 at 11 a.m. for those who are interested in researching your family tree. 
• ·         Thursday November 7 at 6 p.m. come to the library to relax before the holiday rush and enjoy making Creative Zentangles. 
•          Need help learning about Google Apps or buying a new computer?  We have Computer Literacy 101 to help with that! Wednesday, November 6 and 20 at 11 a.m.

Happenings in Harrisville

We are having so much fun at Harrisville Library and we want you to come to join us in the fun too.

Coming up Saturday, March 23rd at 10:00 am, we will be showing the 2018 Universal Pictures production of The House With a Clock in Its Wall. The movie is rated PG and runs for 1 hour and 40 minutes. The movie stars Jack Black, Eli Roth, Cate Blanchett, and Sunny Sulijic. Free popcorn! Family Friendly.

We have a full calendar of events for April as well.

Saturday, April 6th at 10:00 am we will be watching the 2018 Columbia Pictures Industries production of Peter Rabbit. The movie is rated PG and runs for 1 hour and 35 minutes. 

The movie stars James Corden, Rose Byrne, and Domhnall Gleeson. Free popcorn! Family Friendly.

Saturday, April 13th at 10:30 am Peter Cottontail is hopping by the library for some fun. We will read stories, play games and make a craft. If the weather is permitting, following story time we will have an egg hunt sponsored by the Harrisville Volunteer Fire Department. Parents don't forget your cameras to snap a picture of the kids with Peter while he is here. Family friendly event

Thursday, April 18th at 4:30 pm join us for Family Bingo. Bring the family or bring a friend because it's bingo time again. We have some awesome prizes to chose from and some yummy snacks to enjoy while we play. Family friendly event.

Thursday, April 25th at 4:00 pm join us for our Make & Take. Rhoda Benton with Cross Her Art will be bringing with her a sweet little bird for us to paint. There is a $20.00 supply fee.

 Please let me Mrs. Kathie know if you will be attending the program by April 23rd. Adult only event.

Monday, April 29th the CMRLS Libraries will be closed for Team Development. Regular hours will resume on Tuesday, April 30th.

December Programs Just Keep On Giving at the Pearl Public Library!

That's right! Don't miss out on these wonderful, free opportunities to get into the holiday spirit. 

Starting with the library's featuring of New Stage Theatre's Youth Acting Troupe as they present 'Twas the Opening Night Before Christmas  on Tues. Dec. 4 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Refreshments will be served.

Fall Fun at Brandon Public Library

October is one of our favorite months of the year here at the Brandon Library. What's not to love? The weather is finally beginning to taper off from the scorching days of summer, and the holiday season is about to kick off with a bang. So, in that case, why not start the season off here with your local library? Trust us, you're not going to want to miss what we have coming up.

Speaking of the holidays, we all know that the last three months of the year mean celebrations, crafts, and of course, cooking. Lots and lots of cooking. Some of us have our holiday food schedules in the bag.

Others...not so much.

When we're not cooking, we're crafting! Join us on Saturday, October 27 for part 1 of our Sweatshirt Jacket Art Project. You'll need a sweatshirt, material scraps, thread, and a sewing machine. If you don't have that last one, don't worry--we have a machine for you!

Already feeling that holiday stress? Make sure to stop by on Saturdays for Falun Dafa classes lead by Stephanie Zhang! Achieve inner tranquility and glean the mental and physical health benefits from the gentle meditation classes every Saturday from 2:30-3:30 PM.

Last but not least, what is October at the Brandon Library without our annual Fall Festival?

On Thursday, October 25 at 6:00 PM, join us here at the library for tons of games, snacks, face painting, bouncy houses, and more!

All ages are welcome to join in the fun, and while costumes are totally optional, they're definitely encouraged.

How To Tuesdays Makes An Intro At The Pearl Public Library!

That's right! Lisa is on a roll! She's lining up great events for her new How To Tuesdays happening every third Tuesday of the month starting this month (October)!

First up is her Resume Writing Class, Tues. Oct. 16 at 6 p..m. which will be held in the Pearl Library's computer lab.  Lisa says she looks for this to be a successful program, because "we have noticed multiple requests for resume help - sometimes daily - from patrons, and feel like this truly is a community need."

Lisa will cover things like the basic steps to writing a resume which include using brevity (that means don't use too many - or unnecessary - words!!!), matching your skills to the job you hope to land and using key words and action verbs.

It's a free program and no reservation is needed!

Now, writing a resume is a serious matter and fits perfectly in the How To Tuesdays format, however so do events that are totally entertaining and lots of fun! And, Lisa has that covered in future programming. Uh-huh, she sure does!

How about DIY Holiday Spa Gifts! Yep! That's coming Tues. November 20 and Make Your Own Handprint Snowman Ornament on Tues. Dec. 18. Remember all the How To Tuesdays are at 6 p.m.

Hey, while we are on the subject of Tuesdays, mark your calendar for the fabulous Fall Festival, Kristen has planned for the Pearl Library's October Family Night on Tues. Oct. 9 from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Yes, another free program, like all library programs are! The Fall Festival will be held outdoors in the field by the Pearl Senior Center located behind the library. Bounce houses, face painting, games and you know it...CANDY! (While supplies last this is!)

It's not called Family Night for nothing! Bring everybody!  Participants are welcome and encouraged to wear Halloween costumes!

Tuesdays are happening at the Pearl Public Library! You don't want to miss a thing!

Dilly Dilly To Medieval Fest Family Night At The Pearl Library!

No, we aren’t talking about celebrating a highly popular, American-style, sudsy brew, Dilly Dilly!  LOL!

No way!

Hey, did ya know that “dilly” is actually defined as excellent, outstanding even remarkable?! And, it’s also known to be a medieval “Cheers”!

SO, fittingly… dilly dilly to The Society for Creative Anachronism’s (SCA) local chapter, Shire of Iron Ox, that Kristen Hillman, the Pearl Library’s youth services supervisor, has booked to entertain all on Tues. Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. 

You don't want to miss this free program! There will be costumes, displays, food and more!

The Shire of Iron Ox, will have a demonstration of the medieval period with displays of armor and weapons. They’ll also demo combat of the Middle Ages. The group hopes to have 12 to 15 of its members come and will likely have tents, fighting ropes and stakes according to one of its officers. It will be an awesome time… Dilly Dilly! By the way, the Shire of Iron Ox is the re-enactment group seen at CelticFest in Jackson!

They’ll be dressed in period costumes so for added fun, Kristen is encouraging program participants to feel free to come dressed in medieval attire! Dilly dilly!

Hey, it’s a medieval gathering. There must be a feast, right?!?! Right.  Only this feast won’t feature all Medieval cuisine! But, there will be BREAD! What's a medieval times feast without bread, and Panera Bread in Flowood is generously donating some! Not to be outdone (just kidding!) the Pizza Shack of Jackson is donating wonderful pizza! See medieval fare won’t be the only yummies featured. But, there’s more…muuuuuuch more!

Also featured will be a Bring Your Own Potluck Dish Competition. The best dish will win a Trophy! So, there should be some really great food for everyone to enjoy!

Pictured is the trophy for Best Potluck Dish that will be awarded to a lucky potluck winner!  A name plate will be added that states Pearl Public Library Medieval Fest 2018 Best Potluck Dish.

Brandon’s Summer Library Program Ends with a Bang!

As our Summer Library Program comes to a close, we at the Brandon Library are going all out for our finale—you guessed it, it’s our annual summer carnival!

Patrons of all ages are invited to join us on Thursday, July 12 from 6pm-7pm as we play games, get our faces painted, eat popcorn and ice pops, and make ourselves dizzy in the bouncy houses! We’ll also have a special visit from the Brandon Fire Department to show us their rides!

(Pro tip: Don’t jump in the bouncy house directly after eating unless you’re feeling brave.)

Then, on Saturday, July 14 from 12pm-1:30pm, come play our last game of Summer Bingo! We had a blast last time, and there are even MORE amazing prizes to choose from if you win! And don’t forget, our blackout winner will receive a $25 gift card to our local Cinemark Theater!

YAM! BAM! Thank You...Young, Creative Artists!

Yes, That's right. Thank you Pearl School District students for sharing your creative side during Youth Art Month (YAM) at the Pearl Public Library! The library has been covered in the students' art all month long! 

This is the tenth year that the Pearl Library has embraced National Youth Art Month by showcasing the Pearl students' art during the month of March. It's great to see family members trickle into the library proudly looking for their loved ones' art!   

On Thursday, March 29 at 5 p.m. there will be a free reception, hosted by the Pearl Library and the Friends of the Pearl Library! This serves as the "official" viewing of the art work.

Loads of people are expected to attend. 

We hope you bring the whole family out for this wonderful evening!

Remember it's free. No invitation needed. You don't want to miss it!

Get your "Craic" on at the Pearl Public LIbrary!

Oh, yeah! Craic is good. Pronounced (crack), it's an Irish slang word that means a fun, entertaining time! And, a good time is what everyone loves!

 You know where you can find it? Uh-huh, at the Pearl Public Library. 

Here's a real cool, free event to get you all geared up for  St. Patrick's Day. 

Come on into the library and see the Jackson Irish Dancers next Tuesday, March 13 at 6 p.m. It's family night directed by Tonia, the Youth Services Supervisor at the library, and she's not about to let you down!

You know, the Jackson Irish Dancers have been performing and offering classes for 20 years, since 1998.  They perform, teach, and even compete sometimes.  

They have classes for children and adults.  You can book them for festivals, school and church events, clubs and yes, libraries too!

“Libraries are among the best places to put on a program,” said Margaret Cupples, President of the Jackson Irish Dancers. “Libraries are always fun because families and kids get involved,” she said. “What we do is traditional Irish dance which is fun to participate in.” 

They’ll perform Irish dances, like Ceili (pronounced Kay-Lee) which is a square dance type group dancing, the solo, up-on-your-toes, Riverdance-style dance and also Sean-nos dance which is an old style, more traditional dance. “Sean-nos is lower to the ground, not on your toes so much,” said Cupples. “It’s a little bit less formal and you use your arms a little.”

       

Hey, you wanna learn some of the moves during the program? They'll be happy to teach some!

Every year right about now, the Pearl Public Library transforms into an art gallery. Seriously! Proud students from the Pearl Schools will fill the library with their artful creations in celebration of National Youth Art Month.

The art will stay up the entire month of March so you'll have plenty of opportunities to come on by and see it.

On Tues. March 3 there's the huge annual Youth Art Month reception, honoring all the kids at 6 p.m. You really don't want to miss this!

DON'T MISS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON OPENER AT THE PEARL LIBRARY!

Want to get into the holiday spirit? Then the Pearl Public Library is the place for the whole family to come and get the joyful mood in motion! The library's annual Holiday Open House will be held Tues, Dec. 3 starting at 5:30 and going until 7:00 p.m. The star of the show will be the first grade choir of the Pearl Lower Elementary School at 6:00 p.m.! It's a must-see performance!  There will also be refreshments for all and crafts for the kiddies! We'll see you then!

The Flowood Library, part of the Central Mississippi Regional Library System, is hosting several Christmas programs that are guaranteed to delight! The library is hosting three programs this year, including its first annual Cookie Contest and Swap! 

"Christmas is such a wonderful time of the year!" Ashley Biggs, Branch Manager, said. "I'm really excited that we're able to have these great events. We can't wait!"

The program to kick off the holiday season is "Story Time and Cookies with Santa," set for December 7th at 9:30 am & 11:00 am. Ms. June, Children's Librarian, will be reading Christmas stories while kids line up to see Santa! (Parent's, bring you camera!) Tickets are FREE but are limited to "first come, first served" and will be released three weeks prior to the program.

The Friends of the Flowood Library will be hosting an Open House on December 12th at 6:00 pm. Come and join the Friends for a performance by the Bells of Faith, the hand bell choir from The Mustard Seed! All are welcome to come and socialize and learn about all the wonderful volunteer opportunities available to them through the Friends of the Flowood Library. Light refreshments will be served.

The final Christmas program is something new! The library is hosting a Cookie Contest and Swap on December 21st, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Bake your best and bring it to the library where the celebrity judge, Mr. Jim Stewart of Fat-Cake Guy, will judge! You only need two dozen cookies to participate, and prizes will be awarded! Fun for the whole family! Special thanks to the Flowood Chamber, the Flowood Young Professionals, State Farm, and others for donating milk and prizes! Registration is not required but is recommended--or just bring your entry on the day of the contest!

Halloween FUN @ Harrisville Library

Halloween is always so much fun. You get to dress up as your favorite character from a book or a movie and you get free candy. Now that's what I call FUN!! I would love to see what you choose as your costume this year. Come to the Harrisville Public Library Costume Party. Thursday, October 31, 2013 starting @ 4:30 p.m. We will have cake and punch provided by the Friends Group. There will also be some fun games to play. Can't wait to see what you picked out for your costume.
