SUMMER READING 2014 is almost here and we are excited! We have over 40 programs lined up for you, from babies to high school seniors. Which group do you think will be launching catapults?!!

If you think reading is boring and library's have nothing but books, we're going to prove you WRONG! Because this year's theme, "Fizz, Boom, Read," is all about science! Not just any science either. The kind you wouldn't expect in a library. Shhh! Don't tell anyone but we will be blowing up things and making slime and spitting watermelon seeds. It will be a summer of fun.

Stop by the Brandon Library today to get your registration bag and calendar. As always, everything is free and you do not have to be registered at Brandon to attend any Brandon events.

Hope to see you soon!

Fluff n' Fudge Book Club @ Brandon

We had a killer (pun intended) time at this week's Fluff n' Fudge Book Club as we discussed The Legs Murder Scandal by Hunter Cole. This chilling account resurrects the story of Ouida Keeton, a.k.a. "Mississippi's Lizzie Borden". The story that rocked 1935 Laurel, MS has been largely forgotten. If you missed it, click here to request a copy!

Now as for the fudge, it was simply to die for (again, pun intended). Here is the recipe for Killer Crack Peanut Butter Fudge. Enjoy!

3 cups sugar
3/4 cup butter
2/3 cup evaporated milk
1 cup JIF peanut butter
1 7oz. jar marshmallow creme
1 tsp. vanilla

Combine sugar, butter, and evaporated milk in a heavy 2 1/2 quart saucepan. Bring to a full boil, stirring constantly. Continue boiling over medium heat for 5 minutes, stirring constantly to prevent scorching. Remove from heat. Add the peanut butter, stirring until melted. Add marshmallow creme and vanilla; beat until well blended.
Spread in a buttered 9x13x2 inch pan. Cool at room temperature, then refrigerate. Cut into squares when firm.

Be sure to join us next time, October 17th @ 10:30, as we read The Lost Years by Mary Higgins Clark. You can get a leg up by requesting it here. As for the fudge, like the book, it's a mystery. Join us to find out!

Happy reading!

Fluff n' Fudge Book Club

Yesterday was our first exciting meetings of the Fluff n'Fudge book club @ the Brandon Library! We discussed Kathryn Stockett's The Help and enjoyed a fudge with a secret ingredient....

no, we didn't let Minnie get a hold of our treat! The special ingredient was Velveeta!

3/4 lb. (12 oz) Velveeta, cut into 1/2 inch cubes

1 cup butter or margarine

6 squares unsweetened chocolate

2 Tbsp. light corn syrup

2 pkg. (16 oz each) powdered sugar (about 8 cups)

1-1/2 cups chopped pecans

1 tsp. vanilla

Place Velveeta, butter, chocolate and corn syrup in large microwaveable bowl. Microwave on HIGH 2 min.; stir. Microwave an additional minute; stir until well blended.

Add chocolate mixture, in batches, to sugar in large bowl, beating with electric mixer on medium speed until well blended after each addition. Stir in pecans and vanilla.

Pour into greased 13x9-inch pan. Smooth top with spatula; cover. Refrigerate several hours or until firm before cutting into 1-inch squares to serve. (For longer storage, wrap tightly and freeze up to 2 months. Thaw in refrigerator overnight before serving.)

Join us next month on February 15th @ 10:30 am! We will be discussing Audrey Niffenegger's Her Fearful Symmetry. What fudge will we be serving this time? Come and find out!

Movies about Authors @ your Library!

Come see the movie, 84 Charing Cross Road, at the Brandon Library on Friday, July 30, 2:00 p.m. This is the last in the month long series of Movies about Authors hosted by the Library. Feel free to bring your own snacks...and a friend!

NETFLIX  describes 84 Charing Cross Road: When feisty New York City writer Helene Hanff (Anne Bancroft) mails a note to a small London bookshop asking for some rare English classics, reserved bookseller Frank Doel (Anthony Hopkins) answers her request, beginning a touching and humorous correspondence. Across two continents and over the course of 20 years, Frank and Helene come to rely on the extraordinary friendship stemming from their intimate missives. Judi Dench also stars.

  • Starring: Anne Bancroft, Anthony Hopkins
  • Director: David Hugh Jones
  • Genre: Romance
  • Awards: BAFTA® Winner ...
  • Rated: PG's Review: An uncommonly and sweetly civilized adult romance between two transatlantic correspondents who never meet, 84 Charing Cross Road is an appealing film on several counts, one of the most notable being Anne Bancroft's fantastic performance in the leading role. Read more:

Look for future movie series @ your Library!
