Spring Greetings!

The winter months are finally over here at the Rez and the librarians are looking forward to the return of the warmer and longer days of spring. We hope that all of our patrons are ready for the fun and exciting events that we have planned at the Reservoir Library.

Read Across America

Come by the library Monday, March 2nd from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., for a special Read Across America story time as we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss. We will read some of our favorite Dr. Seuss books and have a birthday party!

Mile March Madness

Come to the library Thursday, March 27th from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. to join us for our Mile March Madness. To celebrate the arrival of spring and our beautiful surroundings, we will be walking on the Reservoir Botanical Garden path during the noon hour. We will also have a special Mile March Madness drawing for a gift card.

Loose Knit Group

Are you a master knitter who is looking to pass on your knowledge to a new generation of knitters? Are you a beginner who is looking to learn from master knitters? Come by the Library every Tuesday during March from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. All experience levels are welcome as we work on our own projects.

High Noon Book Club

Join us at the library Tuesday, March 19th from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. as the High Noon Book Club has its March meeting. We will be reading the book An Irish Country Doctor by Patrick Taylor. All patrons are invited to bring a brown bag lunch and participate in the discussion.  Dessert will be provided.

Spring Break

March 9th through March 13th is Spring Break for our Rankin County students. Come by the Library to get your Spring Break Reads!

December Greetings!

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year from the librarians at the Northwest Point Reservoir Library! We are busy making holiday plans with family and friends. While we may be busy, we always look forward to seeing our patrons come in to check out the latest books and movies that we have to offer!

Special Holiday Hours 
All CMRLS Libraries will be closing on Monday, December 23rd, at 3:00 p.m., for the Christmas Holiday.  Normal hours of operation will begin Thursday, December 26th. We want to thank our patrons for their continued support.

New Years Holiday Closing 

All CMRLS Libraries will close at 3:00 p.m., on Tuesday,  December 31st, and remain closed until Thursday, January 2nd, for the New Year's holiday. We hope all our patrons have a safe and happy holiday season.

Santa Claus is Coming to The Rez

Are you ready for Christmas time?! Wanting to visit with Santa Claus before his long awaited Christmas Eve flight? Come by the Library Thursday, December 19th, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., as we welcome Santa Claus for a last minute visit before he makes his Christmas Eve journey! Bring your wish list and enjoy some Christmas Cookies with Santa!


Christmas Movie Matinee  


Join us at the library Thursday, December 12th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., for a special Christmas showing of the classic movie, "The Polar Express".  The movie, produced in 2004, is rated (G) and is 1 hour and 40 minutes long.  Free popcorn will be provided courtesy of the Friends of the
Reservoir Library while supplies last.

High Noon Book Club 

Join us at the library Thursday, December 19th, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., for another hour of fine dining and even finer literature as the High Noon Book Club has its December meeting! To celebrate the holiday spirit we will be reading an early John Grisham work, "Skipping Christmas". We will also be voting on the first book of the year 2020! All patrons are welcome to attend and encouraged to bring a sack lunch.  A holiday themed dessert will be provided.

Mugshots Family Trivia 

Are you a Trivia Master looking for their next exciting game to conquer? Are you new to trivia and wanting to get more involved? Come to Mugshots in Flowood for another exciting game of family friendly pub trivia hosted in partnership by the Northwest Point Reservoir Library and the G. Chastaine Flynt Memorial Library in Flowood. All experience levels are welcome!

Are you a master knitter who is looking to pass their knowledge to a new generation of knitters? Are you a beginner who is looking to learn from master knitters? Come by the Northwest Point Reservoir Library every Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., for another meeting of the Loose Knit Group.  All experience levels are welcome as we work on our own projects.  

Goodbye to Uno!

Our library goldfish, Uno, decided to leave the library where he has seen many patrons come to  check out books and movies. His last day with the library was Halloween day. He wanted to wish all of his friends a safe and happy New Year! 

Time is Flying and September is just around the corner!

But August isn't over yet!

Don't forget that the Pearl Public Library features How-To Tuesday on the third Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. 

So, don't miss the August How-To Tuesday on the 20th at 6 p.m. Join in fun stenciling using paper, paint, jar lids and a toothbrush! The program is free, no reservation required and materials are supplied!

And, for all you book lovers out there, The Pearl Morning Book Club meets every two weeks on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. If you aren't a member, no worries. Just stop on by. You can call the Pearl Library at 601-932-2562 for the title that will be discussed. The next meeting is Wed. Aug. 28 at 10 a.m.

If you can't make the Pearl Morning Book Club in August, plan on rolling in with the month of September! Hey, it happens every other week on Wednesday! Plenty of opportunities to get your read on!

Get your craft juices flowing first thing in September with Popsicle Stick Coasters, the Simply Crafts program on Tues. Sept. 3 at 6 p.m.  A Free program, no reservations required and materials supplied! Simply Crafts is every first Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m.

July Greetings from Reservoir Library

The librarians at the Northwest Point Reservoir Library have been busy with Summer Library Programs this year! We have had so much fun with learning about outer space and participating in our reading program with all our performers and their shows. We hope that our patrons have had as much fun as we have during this summer and eagerly look forward to next year's Summer Library Program.

Summer Bird Watching

  

Are you interested in the various different kinds of birds that live around the Ross Barnett Reservoir? Are you wanting to see if there are any feathered visitors from other parts of the country? Come by the Northwest Point Reservoir Library to take part in our daily bird watching! We will have binoculars for patrons to use to watch for the different breeds of birds that call the Rez home as well as those who are only stopping for a brief in-flight rest.

High Noon Book Club 

Join us Thursday July 18^th at 12:00 p.m. for another meeting of the High Noon Book Club! This month we will have a "Book Report Meeting." All participants are encouraged to read a book of their own choosing and then give a report on it and we will choose the next book to read for the next meeting.  All participants are encouraged to bring their own brown bag lunch. A Tour of the Solar System 

Have you ever wanted to take a trip to the stars? Do you look up at the night sky and wonder what it would be like to visit all the stars millions of miles away? Come to the Northwest Point Reservoir Library Monday, July 1^st at 1:00 p.m. as we take a trip to the stars with Dr. Cal DeWitt. 

Splashdown with the Reservoir Fire Department 

Wanting to cool down from a hot summer spent outside reading and watching the stars? Come by the Northwest Point Reservoir Library July 15th @ 11:00 a.m. for an hour of summer fun in the sun as we join the Reservoir Fire Department for a memorable day of water and games! We will see you there!

Summer Library Program

We hope that all our patrons have had a great and restful summer of relaxation and reading! The librarians at the Northwest Point Reservoir Library have enjoyed seeing all our patrons as they have come in and out during the Summer Library events. We look forward to seeing all our patrons this fall as school gets back into session.  

Book Clubs...A Great Opportunity to Connect

When I was a little girl, I remember living in a neighborhood where we knew a lot of the families. My sisters and I played with the neighborhood children, and my mother was friends with the mothers of those children. About once a week, all the mothers would get together for coffee and conversation. I was not privy to most of those conversations but I feel certain they revolved around the ups and downs of marriage and motherhood. In the rush, rush of life today in this digital age in which we live, we often don’t take the time or find the opportunity to enjoy this wonderful pastime. If you are interested in adding this activity to your schedule, might I suggest joining a book club.

We started an adult book club at the Pelahatchie branch over five years ago. In that time, we have read and discussed over 60 books in many genres, but the most important thing that has happened for this group is they have connected personally with each other. During a typical meeting, the ladies will discuss the book they have read but also chat about the highs and lows of caring for an ill husband, the frustrations of growing older, the differences in their grandchildren’s generation and theirs, and, yes, occasionally politics. At one time or another, each of the ladies has spoken to me about their connection with this group and how important the time spent together is to them. Outside of the library, these ladies rarely see each other, but when they are here, they know they are among friends.

So if you’re looking to connect on a closer level, consider attending one of the book clubs in our system and check it out for yourself. The dynamics of groups are different so you might consider trying more than one until you find the right place for yourself. Click on the link to locate the book club meetings available in May. Greetings from the Reservoir Library!

Well, the holidays are behind us as we hurry on into the New Year of 2019! We hope that all our patrons have had a great and happy holiday season.  The librarians and our pet goldfish are back at work and ready to serve the public! We are ready to make 2019 the best year at the Rez!

Blind Date with a Book

Need a date for Valentine’s Day? Come by the Reservoir Library during the month of February to be set up on a blind date with some great literature! We will have the books wrapped in paper so that it can truly be a blind date. Remember no peeking!

Library Closings

The Reservoir library will be closed on February 8^th for staff development day.  We will resume normal hours of operation February 11^th at 10am. Thank you for being supportive of all our libraries in the CMRLS organization!

The library will also be closed Monday, February 18^th in observance of Presidents Day; normal business hours will resume Tuesday, February 19^th at 10am. We hope that all our patrons have a happy and safe holiday. We look forward to returning to serve our patrons after a break.

Mugshots Family Trivia Night

Are you a trivia master who is looking for a good challenge? Are you new to the entire game of trivia and are looking to get started? Come to Mugshots of Flowood Tuesday, February 19^th at 6:30 pm for another exciting night of trivia! Patrons of all ages are welcome to attend. Mugshots gift cards will be awarded as prizes to the winners and mugshots will provide free chips and Rotel dip for all patrons with a library voucher which can be picked up before at either library location or can be found on the tables during trivia night. Trivia night is brought to you by the G. Chastaine Flynt Memorial Library, the Northwest Point Reservoir Library, and the great staff of Mugshots of Flowood. We look forward to seeing you there!

Library Lover’s Month

February is the month of love here at the Northwest Point Reservoir Library, Library Lover’s Month that is! Come by the Reservoir Library during February to enter your name and why you love the Reservoir Library in our Library Lover’s Month drawing. The Winner will be drawn on Friday, March 1^st for two $20 gift cards at Mississippi Legends Grill. Just perfect for a late Valentine’s Day date.

High Noon Book Club

For the month of February, the High Noon Book Club will be reading the book The Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How it Changed America which is written by John M Barry.  This book tells about the history of the Great Flood of 1927 when the river overflowed its banks after a time of too much rain and the result was one of the worst floods in American history. 

The last book that the High Noon Book Club read was titled Dispatches from Pluto written by Richard Grant. The entire book club really liked the book and would recommend it to anyone who is wanting to read about Mississippi written from the perspective of an outsider.

The Book club will meet on February 21^st 12pm to 1pm at the Northwest Point Reservoir Library. All patrons are welcome to attend and bring a brown-bagged lunch of their choice. Deserts will be provided but patrons are also welcome to bring something with them if they would like. The next book for the month of April will be voted on towards the end of the book club meeting.  All suggestions are welcome and greatly appreciated. We will see you there for an hour of good food, good literature, and good friends!

Valentine’s Day Movie

Join us at the Rez on February 14^th for a special Valentine’s Day showing of the movie “Valentine’s Day”!!! Valentine’s Day tells the story of various people and how they spend the holiday of love whether it is with their loved ones or searching for that special someone who got away. Free popcorn will be provided while supplies last courtesy of the Popcorn Palace in Flowood. The movie will primer at 11 a.m. in the morning. We look forward to seeing you and your date there!

Lose Knitters Group

Are you a master knitter looking to share your knowledge of knitting with others? Are you new to the entire hobby of knitting and looking for more knowledgeable people to show you some pointers? Join our lose knitters every Tuesday of the month or a whole two hours of knitting and sewing. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own projects to work on.  This month the group will meet on the 5, 12, 19^th and the 26^th.  The group will meet from 1 to 3 in the afternoon. We hope to see you there.

 

Book Bubbles with Uno

Well, Uno is back from his New Year’s Eve Party! All the holidays have been great for Uno and his family. Like the rest of the library staff, he is back from his holidays of rest and relaxation and is ready to get back to helping the staff at the Northwest Point Reservoir Library serve the public and seeing the children as they come to visit the library.  While taking one of his bubble blowing breaks Uno and I got to talking about the holidays of the month of February and we realized that Valentine’s day was fast approaching.  Uno told me that his plans for Valentine’s day are to go out into the Reservoir to see his friends as they all go out to eat.  Uno wants to wish all his friends a happy Valentine’s Day and a happy Library Lover’s Month.

Parting Words

We want to thank all our supporters both here at home and abroad for their continued support using our books, computers, printing services, and various other services. Flowood Book Club

Flowood Book Club

February 19, 2019, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Everyone is invited to come and discuss their favorite books and,

perhaps, learn of a few more good reads in the process. 

 The club shall meet every third Tuesday of the month thereafter from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

 There shall be coffee and refreshments for attendees.

One of our main purposes here at the Flowood Library is to promote an interest in reading and improve literacy. We do a lot of this through our children’s programs and through our adult book club program. We also try to anticipate the needs of our community in the books that we order for our collection.

For the Flowood Book Club, we provide the coffee. Our attendees bring their critical expertise and discuss what they liked or did not like about a selected book. The debates can be quite lively and thought-provoking. I can’t comment on the coffee.  

After high school, many young adults do not continue reading books for business or pleasure. Reading opens minds to new ideas and new possibilities. It is one of the primary ways we educate ourselves and a good education leads to better opportunities in life. Reading is an essential skill that we must learn and learn well if we are to succeed. Mark Twain once said, “The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read.”

In high school over the course of one summer, I was required to read three books that had no appeal for me at all. And I was a little miffed at having been assigned homework over the summer. Why did English teachers always assign dry material to read? I read two of these books and appropriated the CliffsNotes for the third. I passed the test and moved on. After school, I would go home and read what I wanted to read: comic books and action-adventure novels. 

I never lost my love for reading. As an adult, I still read, but I am more particular in what I spend my time reading. One of the books that I very much enjoyed in recent years was Last of the Breed by Louis L’Amour.

This book is a western, but it takes place in the late 1980s in Siberia. It is about an Air Force officer Major Joseph Makatozi (Joe Mack) who is forced down by the Soviet Air Force. He is taken prisoner and moved to a prison camp where he is interrogated. He is given an ultimatum to share what he knows about the experimental aircraft he was flying, or he can remain in prison.

Joe Mack quickly escapes by pole vaulting over a fence and out of the prison camp.  With the Soviet Army in pursuit, he disappears into the Siberian wilderness. Joe Mack is an Air Force officer, but he is also a Sioux Indian.  As the months drag on he leaves behind the man he was in the Air Force, and to the dread of his pursuers, reverts back to his native heritage of a Sioux warrior. 

    

Last of the Breed was a page turner and a pleasure to read. I had the privilege of discussing this book at a book club meeting.

Every month on the third Tuesday of the month the Flowood Book Club gathers to discuss the latest book.  The book for the month of February is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larrson.

Quit rushing around; stop and get lost in a fairy tale.

This month our book club is reading Harry’s Trees by Jon Cohen and what a great story to get lost in during the rush, rush of the season. I don’t know any other way to describe the book but as a fairy tale for adults. 

Take one man that loses his beloved wife in a freak accident (for which he blames himself), add a little girl that loses her dad unexpectedly and thinks he’s come back as a forest creature. Stir in a fortune the man receives for the accident that cost him his wife and an odd brother named Wolf that is intent upon taking the money for himself. Fold in a librarian’s story about a grum and his gold. Add in a grieving wife trying to move on, a forest, a cast of unique characters from a small town, a treehouse in the forest, a falling-down library, and $4 million in gold. Beat together a man and a little girl on an adventure that helps them reconcile their great loss, and you truly have the makings of a fairy tale.

All in the book club have wonderful things to say about this book. Charming! Enchanting! A true modern-day fairy tale! I have personally read this book twice and enjoyed it as much the second time as the first. Take our advice and read this delightful title. If you’re truly too busy now, it would be a great pastime for those cold January days.

SOFT LOVE LEADS THIS CHAPTER 1 BOOK CLUB IN PEARL!

Janette Oke (pronounced  - oak ), born Feb 18, 1935 in Canada, is a Christian fiction writer. She reportedly pioneered inspirational fiction. 

Love Comes Softly was Oke's first novel which was published in 1979 and sold over a million copies. She is now the bestselling author of more than 70 books that have sold millions of copies. 

The Chapter 1 Book Club will discuss Love Comes Softly, the first in the Love Comes Softly three-book series, at the Pearl Public Library's Thurs. Dec. 3 book club meeting at 6 p.m. 

The novel - an inspirational romance - is set in the pioneer era where Oke's books are often situated.   Marty Claridge didn't see it coming. She was happy, newly married and totally in love with her husband Clem. As a good wife does, she followed her husband's lead to the West where a new life would prove promising. Before poor Clem could even stake a land claim, he was sadly killed in a freak accident. Marty was devastated. What on earth was she going to do in this new territory and with no family around?  Well, it just so happens that a widower by the name of Clark Davis was desperately needing a mother for his daughter Missie. The day of Clem's funeral, Clark made a proposal to Marty. She stays, marries him in name only and be a mother to his child. In return, he would provide for her through the winter. Come spring, if she's still wanting to head back home, he would pay her way there if she took Missie with her. Read the book for the rest of the story as the saying goes!!!!

CHAPTER 1 BOOK CLUB SOARS IN SEPTEMBER!

Cecelia has picked another good title for her book clubbers!

The Chapter 1 Book Club, at the Pearl Public Library, will discuss author Sue Monk Kidd's most recent book, The Invention of Wings, a New York Times bestseller.   Kidd is also the author of The Secret Life of Bees, another bestseller and her first novel. 

The Invention of Wings was inspired by the true, 1830s story of southern, abolitionist sisters, Sarah and Angelina Grimke. The two were exiled from their home city of Charleston, S.C. for speaking against slavery and standing for liberty and equality. 

Kidd discovered that at the age of 11, Sarah's parents gave her the "human present" of 10-year-old slave girl Hetty as her handmaid. Sarah totally rebelled by teaching Hetty to read. It resulted in Hetty being punished with a beating so severe that it killed her. Kidd wanted her novel to bring Hetty back to life, and that's exactly what she did in this riveting story.

Published January of this year, The Invention of Wings, tells a lively story revolving around fictional Sarah and Hetty in a story of what might have been. Kidd begins the fictitious account with both girls cast in life circumstances they both despised, giving Hetty her own life of struggle and change. The story, which is immensely alive and believable, unfolds throughout years of the girls' lives.  

The Invention of Wings remained on the bestsellers' list for over five months. It has been translated into 20 languages, was chosen for Oprah's Book Club and there are plans to turn the book into a film.

PEARL'S CHAPTER 1 BOOK CLUB MEETING RESCHEDULED!

The Chapter 1 Book Club discussion of Tom Franklin's Crooked Letter Crooked, Crooked Letter, scheduled for tonight, Thurs. Aug. 14 at 6 p.m., has been moved to next Tues. Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. The book club will resume it's normal Thursday night schedule in September.

The Chapter 1 Book Club at the Pearl Public Library will feature Franklin's, Crooked Letter Crooked Letter Tues. Aug. 19 at 6 p.m.

Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter is set in the town of Chabot in the 1970s. Larry Ott, a product of a dysfunctional childhood with an overbearing, verbally abusive father, and Silas Jones were childhood pals. For that day and time, they could not have been more different.  Larry was white, from a middle class family and Silas was black, son of a single mother and poor.

A special friendship was shattered when tragedy struck. Larry's date that he had taken to a movie went missing. She was never found and everyone blamed Larry. Even though he never said he did it, in the local society's eyes, he was guilty as sin. Broken, Silas couldn't continue honoring the friendship and simply left town.

Larry never got passed the ostracism and pretty much kept to himself much as he had all his life outside the friendship with Silas. Two decades later, in a crazy twist of events, Silas returns as a constable.  He doesn't even cross paths with Larry until another girl goes missing,  Once again, Larry is blamed.  Now, it seems that the two, once friends, might just be on opposite ends of the law.

Franklin, an Alabama native, moved to Oxford, MS in 2000 as the John and Renee Grisham Writer-in-Residence at Ole Miss. Franklin won a 2001 Guggenheim Fellowship and taught at Sewannee during the 2002-2003 academic year. Today, Franklin and his wife, Beth Ann Fennelly, also an author, maintain a home in Oxford and both are English department faculty at Ole Miss. Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter is Franklin's third novel and was published in 2010.

BARBIE BASSETT TOPS ADULT SUMMER READING PROGRAM AT THE PEARL PUBLIC LIBRARY!

The Pearl Public Library's Summer Reading Program - full of fun, free, no reservations required events - kicks off Mon. June 2. The Adult Theme is Literary Elements.

How better to celebrate Literary Elements than to bring in a local author. But, NOT just any author mind you.

The featured headliner is local celebrity and everybody's favorite meteorologist, Barbie Bassett, who will be the guest speaker at the library's Brown Bag program Fri. June 27 at 12 -noon. Bring your lunch. Refreshments and drinks provided.

Bassett will talk about and sign her new book Carry An Umbrella When There's No Rain in the Forecast: 365 Days of Living by Faith.  

"We are so honored and extremely excited to have Barbie as part of our Summer Reading Program," says Eleanor Jones, the library's Reference Supervisor and Adult Programs Coordinator. "She is loved by many and is a wonderful writer. This is a great opportunity for people to come, meet her for free.  You can't beat that! Also anyone that is interested, can buy one of her books and have her sign it for them. That would be something to treasure forever!"

More Literary Elements are celebrated at the Chapter 1 Book Club gathering, Thurs. June 12 at 6 p.m. with a discussion on Defending Jacob, a legal thriller by William Landay. Light refreshments and door prizes included.

Also on tap for June's Adult Summer Reading celebration is a special Simply Crafts night - headed up by Eleanor - showing how to make gorgeous Mercury Glass (also called Silvered Glass) on Tues. June 10 at 6 p.m. All materials supplied. 

On Fri. June 13 at 1 p.m., senior adults can enjoy a movie at the library during Senior Friday Flicks.

IT'S A NIGHT OF WILLIE!

Cecelia is hitting a lot of home runs with her Chapter 1 Book Club at the Pearl Public Library,and she's on a winning streak now! Who doesn't love Mississippi's own homeboy, the late, Willie Morris?!

Willie was born in Jackson in 1934 and later moved to Yazoo City when he was six. He played baseball, football and basketball at Yazoo City High School as well as served as editor of the school newspaper. 

One of Mississippi's best-known writers, personal experiences is where Willie pulled from to produce his awe-inspiring work. Some of his best known pieces include North Toward Home, Yazoo, Good Old Boy, My Dog Skip and The Last of the Southen Girls. Willie died September of 1999.

Pick any book written by Willie Morris for the Chapter 1 Book Club meeting Apr., 10 at 6 p.m. Cecelia would love to see you. No reservation required and there are  always door prizes and light refreshments!

CHAPTER 1: SKYPE SUCCESS!

The Pearl Library's Chapter 1 Book Club's live author's visit was  a huge success and everyone had a fabulous time said Cecelia, the book club's leader.

The Skype visit took place on Thurs. Feb. 13. "It is so exciting to be able to visit live with a best-selling author," said Cecelia speaking of author Becky Aikman.  "Becky lives in New York but called us from Los Angeles where she was for a book signing."

Aikman must have been great, and really down to earth because Cecelia said, "I could hang out with her! Becky was friendly, funny, entertaining and very generous with her time. She updated us on 'The Blossoms' as the five, young widows dubbed themselves. They are still friends.  They keep in contact with one another and get together periodically."

Here's what Saturday Night Widows is about:  Journalist and former Newsday reporter, Aikman lost her husband to cancer when she was in her forties. Sad and lonely she tried a support group. All she felt was more sad, and that was not working for her. She knew she had to get busy reinventing herself.  

Aikman researched what had been written about dealing with loss. Later, she remarried, but the traumatic loss was still present so Aikman found herself putting the valuable research to work.  

By asking around, Aikman was able to form her own group of young widows. Remarried for four years by the group's first meeting, Aikman also had new challenges to tackle. As if grief issues weren't enough, she now had to deal with a "new life, new career,  new husband, new stepdaughter, new home and new dog," as she put it. 

Her mission was to balance a new life with memories from the past.  Not an easy feat, but with five new friends, a lot of laughter and a few tears, Aikman made it work!

A Skype visit takes a book club meeting to another level said Cecelia. "If you or someone you know is in a book club, a Skype visit with an author makes a very unique program," she said. "Many authors, especially new ones, will work with you on speaking to your group."

Chapter 1 Book Club reaches for "Air"!

You don't want to miss this! Cecelia and her group, at the Pearl Library, are reading a great Mississippi author's work for January's Chapter 1 Book Club meeting.

Deborah Johnson's (a.k.a Deborah Johns) The Air Between US is the book of the month.

The Air Between Us takes place in segregated Revere where, like in most Mississippi towns, back in the 1960s, black people live on one side of the town, the whites on the other. They rarely mix, but then how does 10-year-old, Willie B. Tate, Jr. known as Critter, who is black and so short he can barely see over the dashboard, end up driving white, Billy Ray Puckett- wounded in a suspicious hunting accident - to a whites-only emergency room? 

The doc assures 'ol Billy Ray he'll be fine, but the good 'ol boy dies. Well, that's how hunting accidents end sometime. Right? Right!  That is until the sheriff orders an investigation. And the stuff that is unearthed!!!! Come to find out, those lines between the blacks and the whites in Revere, when you look a little deeper, aren't all that defined after all. Connections are revealed... hmmmmm.....

In The Air Between Us readers are kept guessing up to the very end!

You absolutely must read this book, and come to the Chapter 1 Book Club meeting on Thurs. Jan. 9 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. You don't have to reserve a spot, and you don't have to join the club, but do come by. We'll see you then. 

Deborah Johnson is a native of Columbus and has written several books with her next novel, The Secret of Magic, slated to be released  Jan 21, 2014. She is the editor for Genesis Press in Columbus, Mississippi and Executive Director of the Colom Foundation. Before moving to Columbus, she lived for eighteen years in Italy where she, for a time, worked as an announcer for the Vatican Radio in Rome. She has written several books and received an award from the Mississippi Library Association  for her novel The Air Between Us.  

It's Ladies' Night and the reading is right at the Pearl Library!

That title! It's soooooo Kool & The Gang, right! Oh, yes, it's ladies' night and the feeling's right! Oh, yes it's ladies' night...Oh what a night....OOOH WHAT A NIGHT!....
Wait a minute! Stop the singing! This is a book remember!

See, it's all about Grace Stanton's life. She has everything going on for herself, but then it all goes south after she finds out her lowdown husband is cheating on her! Poor Grace. She really doesn't handle it well at all and ends up losing everything! She's even court ordered to divorce recovery therapy. Grace moves in with mom who lives above the Sandbox, a beach bar. Not Grace's ideal life.  But, things start looking up as these divorce recovery sessions turn into "Ladies' Night" sessions and major bonds are formed.
