National Library Week

 

National Library Week is this week, April 3 - 9. This is a time to celebrate and recognize our libraries, librarians, and all the great resources our library can offer. This year's theme is Connect with Your Library. This is a very fitting theme because that is what libraries do; connect people with other worlds, each other, the internet, and so much more. 

The Central Mississippi Regional Library System uses this week to recognize our local funding authorities and our loyal library patrons. There are many events taking place this week to celebrate National Library Week. 

There will be ribbon-cutting ceremonies to celebrate our new Little Free Libraries in Harrisville, Puckett, Pelahatchie, and Morton. There will be patron appreciation events all throughout our system. Visit our online calendar for the complete list of programs your library will be offering this week! 

Everyone Saves Money at the Library!

If you haven't paid a visit to your local library lately, then you probably paid too much. Because libraries are such great savings places, the Forest Public Library is celebrating National Library Week and Money Smart Week with a special checkout incentive during the month of April. Every time patrons borrow materials from the library, they receive a printed receipt with the due date and renewal information, website and telephone contact, and at the very bottom of the receipt - right underneath the total number of checkouts for the session - the dollar amount saved by using your library. The information is displayed on the receipt in the same way that membership cardholders save money at local retail stores, drug store chains, club member companies, and online shopping venues.

The savings to the library user is often significant. Patrons check out a variety of items at the library, including DVDs, books, audiobooks, CDs, fitness equipment, and even cake pans! These items can be expensive to purchase, especially if only used one time. Libraries often compare to bookstores with the most recent bestsellers and just-released DVDs of the newest movies and television series. To buy, rent and/or stream these items can cost hundreds of dollars per year. The library staff had the idea to total how much money local patrons save during a one-month period.

The promotion also has an additional money incentive - a $100 VISA card! Each time patrons check out items, they will receive an entry for the drawing. The entry will include the patron's card number and the amount saved on the receipt. The drawing will be held on Friday, April 30, at 5:30 p.m., and the winner will be notified on Monday, May 3rd. The $100 VISA card is provided by the Friends of the Forest Public Library.

National Library Week (April 4-10, 2021) is a time to celebrate our nation's libraries, library workers, contributions, and promote library use and support. First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is sponsored by the American Library Association and all types of libraries across the country participate. During the pandemic, libraries have learned to adapt resources and services to meet patrons' needs. The theme for National Library Week 2021 is "Welcome to YOUR Library." The Forest Public Library staff welcomes patrons to visit the library in person, use our continued curbside service or see what is available online with our free virtual programs, online databases, and library apps. 

The American Library Association is also a supporter organization for Money Smart Week, which is held April 10-17, 2021. Money Smart Week is a national public education program coordinated by a network of supporters that provides people of all ages the knowledge and skills to make better informed financial decisions focusing on the key financial pillars of saving, spending, borrowing, and planning.

Combining the two important weeks with a month-long promotion is the best way to celebrate both events. Welcome to your library, save money, and enter a drawing to win a $100 VISA card! Everyone saves money at the library -- how much will you save?

April at the Morton Library

 If you need to try and find something new to read, stop by the library and pick a book from the jar to try.  They are color-coded by genre of the book or just grab one for something totally different.  We will also be having National Library Week so we will be having a lot of great activities online for all ages.  We will also have take-home crafts to pick up in the library for all ages and even a family craft for the whole family to make together. Come check out a family movie and make some snacks and spend quality time together as a family! 

We would like to thank all of our Friends of the Morton  Library for all that they do for us all year long and would like to invite others to become a Friend of the Library and receive special library benefits and help to make our library the best it can be! We need your help to do this! Memberships can be picked up at the library. The enrolment fee for joining is Students $1, individuals $5, family $10, and a business $25 per year. This is a great way to help out your local library!

We are slowly trying to update the inside of the library to make it more enjoyable for you so come by and see the progress!

Community Strong at the Pearl Public Library That's for Sure!

National Library Week, sporting the theme "Libraries = Strong Communities" is April 7 -13. 

It will be a memorable 2019 National Library Week at the Pearl Public Library!

Bet on that!

This may be the biggest event ever for Central MS Regional Library System's nine Rankin County libraries as they join forces to put on the first annual Central Comic Con at the Pearl Public Library on Sat. April 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.!

In an impressive celebration of community, there will be something for all ages! Bring the whole family and all your friends!

Look for artists such as Tony Reed, Emily Riffle, Michael Hipps, Derek Craft and Will Brooks. Sean Starwars of Laurel, MS plans to be here as well.

Young Adult (YA) author Rendy Breland of Memphis, who is a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism and has written a three-part book series, The Saga of Little Bird, will be present.

Janet Ferguson- Christian Romance Author: Ms. Ferguson is a contemporary Christian humor and romance author. She will be on site promoting her books.

There be Fortnite demos, video games and tournaments, table top games, Kids’ Krafts, drawing workshops, trivia contests and so so much more! 

All events are free, but there will be some things for sale, such hamburgers and hotdogs, t-shirts, stickers, magnets and buttons.

Sebastopol April 2019 Happenings

Sebastopol Public Library will be closing early Tuesday, April 9, at 5:00 p.m. for the Scott County Reads book talk and signing taking place at the Forest Public Library. Everyone is invited to join us as we have a book talk and signing with Michael Farris Smith Tuesday, April 9, at 6:00 p.m. Come into any of the Scott County Libraries, Forest, Lake, Morton, or Sebastopol, by the end of Monday, April 8, to enter a chance to win a signed copy of "The Fighter", winners will be announced the evening of the event and you must be present to win.

April 2019 Taylorsville Timeline To Do's

Let this April be a time of To Do's at your Library in Taylorsville. Listed below are some of the Awesome April events we have planned for you to mark off of your To Do List.

April 7^th thru April 13^th we will be celebrating National Library Week throughout our system. Here at Taylorsville we will be honoring our patrons of the community with a reception at the library. This will be a ‘come and go’ event on Friday, April 12^th from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

Our county wide event for National Library Week will include the Mize, Polkville and Raleigh libraries. During this event patrons are encouraged to come in and write a Six Word Story. This event stems from the story of Ernest Hemingway winning a bet that he could write a short story only six words long. His story has a beginning, a middle and an end. The story is “For sale. Baby shoes. Never worn”. We are inviting all our patrons to come in and use their writing skills to write their own Six Word Story. This event begins April 8^th thru April 13^th with the winner announced on Monday, April 15^th. A $25 dollar gift card will be awarded to the winner.

Children’s Book Week will be observed beginning April 30^th thru May 5^th. For every children’s book your child reads, their name will be entered into a drawing for a jar of candy. The drawing will be held May 13^th. This year is the 100^th Anniversary of Children’s Book Week so I’m betting there might be 100 pieces of candy in the jar!

Each Wednesday at 11:00 am will be our Preschool Story Time. Our Awesome April themes are:

April 3rd:   Oh, The Green Green Grass of Home

April 10th: A “Pet” a Day, Keeps Us Happy All Day

April 17th: Creepy Carrots / Happy Easter

April 24th: Let’s Take Care of Our Home

                   

These programs are filled with fun books, music, and crafts!

On April 8th at 3:30, our Magnolia Monday for K to 6th grade will learn how to make air dry clay to use for their own DIY cutouts. Supplies provided at the library

       

On April 9th at 3:30, our Totally Teen Tuesday for Tweens and Teens will learn how to make air dry clay to use for their own DIY sculpture. Supplies provided at the library.

Our Adult and Senior Book Club meets on Tuesday, April 9th at 3:00. We will be reading and discussing the latest novel by: Laura Childs, Broken Bone China.

Our Friends of the Library Chapter would love for you to join them on Tuesday, April 9th at 3:30, for their monthly meeting to discuss upcoming events and ways to help the library make them a success.

Stop By the Pearl Library, Swap Howdies with a Staffer during National Library Week and Win a Sweet Treat!

April is a big month for libraries everywhere. That's when National Library Week is celebrated. This year it's April 8 -14 with the theme "Libraries Lead."  

You know what? Libraries as leaders is nothing new! 

You see, back in 1958 is when the first National Library Week was observed by the American Library Association (ALA).  

This is how it came about. Back in the 1950s folks were spending less time on reading books. Yep, they were into radio, television and music, especially musical instruments. Well, that really got the attention of the ALA and the American Book Publishers. They formed a nonprofit citizens organization called the National Book Committee in 1954.

Let me tell you this committee had some big goals that ranged from encouraging people to use their leisure time to read to "improving incomes and health" and "developing strong and happy family life." 

See what I mean? Libraries as important role models for communities has been part of libraries' goals and accomplishments for years!

In 1957 a plan was developed for National Library Week in an effort to motivate people to read so that they would support and use libraries. In 1958 sporting the theme "Wake Up and Read!", the first National Library Week was observed.  National Library Week was observed again in 1959 and continued yearly. When the National Book Committee disbanded in 1974, the ALA assumed the lead sponsorship.

At the Pearl Library, the goal is to make National Library Week very special. So, in an effort to get patrons connected not only to the Pearl Library, but to library staffers, Amy, the adult program coordinator, has come up with a sweet, great way to do that! 

Oh, yes! Come on in and introduce yourself to a staffer April 9 -13, write the staffer's name on a slip of paper provided for you and get a sweet treat in return. 

That's not all Amy has up her sleeve. Check out some of the other great National Library Week events!

Hopping, Popping, Gardening And Mysteries, BINGO! It Must Be April and National Library Week At the Pearl Library! OH YEEAAAH!

     National Library Week 2017 runs from April 9 -15, with the theme Libraries Transform. That has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?  Libraries DO transform. They transform people. They transform communities.  Libraries offer so much! Like what, you ask? During the entire month of April, the lineup of events at the Pearl Public Library will transform and amaze. Ready?  Here we go!
     When it comes to adult programming in April, just follow Amy's trail. She says, when you hippity hop right into the library during April; tell us why you visited and get entered into a drawing for a sweet prize. The drawing will be Monday, May 1st. 

      Monday April 10th is NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK KICKOFF - from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., come to the library and fill out a survey and tellus how we can improve our services. You'll be entered into a drawing scheduled the very next day, April 11th, and the chance to win a cool prize.  Now, that's not all that's happening on this day!

    The Tuesday of every annual National Library Week is set to honor librarians. It's called NATIONAL LIBRARY WORKERS' DAY.  You probably already know how ridiculously awesome the Pearl Library staff is, don't you? Of course you do! Sooo, from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. We want you to stop by the library, enjoy a snack and tell us why your favorite librarian is a star.

   Drum roooooollll please. This one is a biggie!  The Friends of the Pearl Library along with the Chapter 1 Book Club present award-winning, local mystery and suspense writer, John M. Floyd. Uh-huh. Right here on Tuesday April 11th at 6 p.m. Patsy, the Chapter 1 Book Club facilitator has a fine program set up. John will talk about this latest book, Dreamland and sign books. The program is free. There will be light refreshments and door prizes.

    Hopping right along, Bingo for Books is Thursday April 13th at 6 p.m. Celebrate National Library Week with a game of Bingo and a chance to win your choice of a variety of books.

Whew! All this hopping has me feeling a little hungry. Oh great! We have that covered too. Free POPCORN! On Friday, April 14th end National Library Week with free popcorn from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Come by and meet your library staff. We will be serving up this wonderful treat! Can you dig it? Sure you can!

Speaking of digging, there's nothing bunnies love more than carrots! YUM-O! Covvverrred! Yes, Amy's Simply Crafts - free adult program - will be making Easter Carrots Rice Krispie Treats at 6 p.m. on Thurs. April 20. No reservation is required and all ingredients supplied!  

Well, maybe you are into a different type of digging. It is that time of year when gardening is becoming the center of attention. Wouldn't you know that the Pearl Library has a great program to help you out. The Rankin County Master Gardeners will be at the library on Thursday April 27th at 6 p.m. to share expert gardening tips. All free. 

Really impressive stuff going on at the Pearl Library! All programs are free! You don't want to miss out on anything.

How do I get a CMRLS Library Card? It's free to anyone who lives, works, or attends school in the 4-County area. After you use your card, we will email or text you to remind you that you have items that will soon be due. The email or text will come 3 days before the due date and will list the items you have checked out. It is just a friendly reminder that you have items that will soon be overdue. There is even a link to use to renew (by phone or online) your items if you need them longer! For your convenience have all family Early Notices sent to one phone or address. We try to save you from overdue fines! 

There are free library programs throughout Rankin, Scott, Simpson, and Smith County libraries; beginning with preschool story times; adult and young adult book clubs, computer or craft classes, and movie matinees. Something for everyone! The Event Calendar is searchable by library branch, age category, or keyword. You may even choose to be reminded by email of a future program. 

We can't say enough about libraries and what you can do with a Library Card! Of course you can still check out books, you just have so many options. Now you have the option of reading the newest bestseller in normal or large print, eBook, downloadable audiobook, audiobook on CD; or because of a visual or physical limitation, books may be requested on digital cartridge, cassette, or Braille from Mississippi's Talking Book Services.

OMG! IT'S HOPPIN' EASTER MADNESS! 

What on earth is going on at the Pearl Public Library!!! 

Do you know what Eleanor just told me? This is huge. This is reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally HUUUUUGE!  

Eggs. Eggs. Eggs. And more Easter Eggs!  Yep! The Easter Bunny just thought it would be a good idea to have an Easter Egg hunt all April-long! So, he delivered eggs and tons of candy to Eleanor!

This is how the hunt works. Find an Easter Egg in the FICTION or NONFICTION book sections of the library (Some patrons already have!). Open it up, and you'll find a note inside instructing you to take the egg to the Reference Desk to redeem your PRRRRRRRIZE! But, that's not all. 

That wonderful, Pearl Library Loving Easter Bunny left a special egg that will be added to the hunt during National Library Week, April 14 - 18! Find the egg and win a very, very special prize!

There's a reason, libraries are celebrated all over the United States for a whole week in April. This year it's April 14 -18. 

Hey!!!! Libraries are WORTH IT! Can you imagine life without libraries?! WAKE ME UP FROM THIS NIGHTMARE, SOMEBODY PLEASE!

There's one thing for sure. The Pearl Public Library is definitely celebrating! On tap are an Easter Egg hunt for adults, trivia and prizes.  Oh, what's this I hear! Eleanor says the bunny is leaving a cute little basket for the winner that finds that special egg!  Cooooooooooooool beans...uh, eggs I mean!  Don't miss it!

Pearl Library starts National Library Week off with glasses and parties!

Yesterday was a huge day for us at the Pearl Library! For starters, it was Dress Like a Librarian Day! Here are a few shots of our supervisors hamming it up in the stacks...

(You have no idea how happy all of us were to don our glasses and official-looking skirts. Fun fact: one of the librarians pictured to the side is actually wearing a skirt that was given to her by ANOTHER librarian at a state library agency. The force of the library was strong with us yesterday!)






While all of the fun dressing up was going on, we were also doing what we normally do as librarians, which means that we were checking books out to patrons, manning the computer lab, running our regular story times, and preparing for programs. Here's a photo of our Children's supervisor giving one of the children's clerks some information about  an upcoming story time.






As late afternoon approached, we had to kick it into serious work mode to prepare for programs. Our children's department hosted Sarah Frances Hardy, who read her picture book Puzzled by Pink to a room full of kids decked out in princess outfits, fairy wings, jeans, pajamas, or whatever they wanted to wear to the Puzzled by Pink Party!

Finally, the adults ended the night with delicious refreshments (inspired by Pinterest, of course!) and a reading by Mississippi's cartoonist-laureate, Marshall Ramsey, who read to us from his book and from his blog, which can be found at http://marshallramsey.com/. 

Wow! What a day! For those of you who joined us, we thank you, and we hope you had a great time! For those of you who couldn't make it by the Pearl Library yesterday, we hope we'll see you later on this week, when James Meredith with speak about his new book and when the MDAH will talk to us about Eudora Welty's house and collection.Check Facebook and our calendar for details!

National Library Week & New Services Announced!

It is National Library Week and Central Mississippi Regional Library System (CMRLS) is excited to announce two new services from Rankin, Scott, Simpson, and Smith County Libraries! Freegal Music and Rocket Languages are both services by Library Ideas(TM) that was named "One of the Top 100 Companies in the Digital Content Industry for 2011-12" by EContent Magazine. 

Freegal Music is a database of over 3 million songs including Sony Music's catalog of legendary artists and over 10,000 music labels from 65 different countries. Registered CMRLS cardholders can download 3 music tracks in MP3 format each week at no cost. In addition, Freegal Music recently announced the availability of free mobile apps. The app is available at the Apple(r) App Store and Google Play(r). This makes the Libraries' music collection mobile and downloadable from anywhere. 

"We have been waiting a long time for a service like this that delivers great music, compatibility with lots of devices and simplicity of use. We think this will be incredibly popular with our patrons and will help the library in marketing all its services to the community," said CMRLS Director Kaileen Thieling.

Where did the name "Freegal" come from? It must be asked often, Library Ideas (TM) answers the question on their website. Freegal, which rhymes with legal, is free, downloadable, legal music. Library Ideas (TM) thinking to further advertise the point came up with "Free and Legal" - it's Freegal. It is memorable, which is what you want when marketing a product and there is no threat of copyright infringement when downloading this music. So, Freegal it is! 

Rocket Languages is an online conversational language lesson database of 13 languages, including American Sign Language and ESL for Spanish and Japanese speakers. The language lessons have been created to help the learner speak naturally; even recording your voice for comparison with every word and phrase used in the course. To reinforce the lessons, Rocket Languages uses Language-Master Games, self-testing, and a forum so that anyone using the language lessons can interact with other learners and your Rocket Languages teachers. 

Other languages in the Rocket Language database are Spanish, Korean, Japanese, Italian, Hindi, German, French, Chinese, Arabic, and Portuguese. Cardholders may work on one or all of the languages that are accessible anywhere through the CMRLS website. Rocket Languages also has iOS and Android apps so that you can use your course wherever you are.

"We are excited to also offer this free Library service. This can be very useful for our communities that continue to grow more diverse, and for travelers. The lessons travel with you, either online, by the use of an app, or by downloading the lessons as pdf or MP3 files," said Dorothy Vance, CMRLS Public Relations Coordinator. 

National Library Week, first sponsored in 1958, is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April.
