Our Summer Library Program is almost here! 

June 7 - July 16, 2021

Sign up today in your local library or online with Beanstack.
Beanstack has added a “Friends” tab to the Beanstack page. Those registered in Beanstack will be able to share their “Friend Code” with family, friends, classmates, etc. This means if you are Beanstack Friends with someone they will be able to see your badges, what challenges you are in, and your reading log. If you don’t want anyone to see these things, you don’t share your “Friend Code”. Friends can see a leaderboard where all your friends are listed and can compete against each other.

Once you are signed up for Beanstack you are able to complete reading goals to be entered into a Grand Prize drawing at your library. Depending on your age group you will have different challenges and a different prize drawing, as listed below: 

Preschool - 5 books - a Prize Basket

Kids (K - 4th grade) - 5 books- a $25 gift card

Tween (5th - 8th grade) - 5 books- a $25 gift card

Teen ( 9th - 12th grade) - 3 books - a $25 gift card

Adult - 3 books - a $25 gift card

Sebastopol April 2019 Happenings

Sebastopol Public Library will be closing early Tuesday, April 9, at 5:00 p.m. for the Scott County Reads book talk and signing taking place at the Forest Public Library. Everyone is invited to join us as we have a book talk and signing with Michael Farris Smith Tuesday, April 9, at 6:00 p.m. Come into any of the Scott County Libraries, Forest, Lake, Morton, or Sebastopol, by the end of Monday, April 8, to enter a chance to win a signed copy of "The Fighter", winners will be announced the evening of the event and you must be present to win.

Hopping, Popping, Gardening And Mysteries, BINGO! It Must Be April and National Library Week At the Pearl Library! OH YEEAAAH!

     National Library Week 2017 runs from April 9 -15, with the theme Libraries Transform. That has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?  Libraries DO transform. They transform people. They transform communities.  Libraries offer so much! Like what, you ask? During the entire month of April, the lineup of events at the Pearl Public Library will transform and amaze. Ready?  Here we go!
     When it comes to adult programming in April, just follow Amy's trail. She says, when you hippity hop right into the library during April; tell us why you visited and get entered into a drawing for a sweet prize. The drawing will be Monday, May 1st. 

      Monday April 10th is NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK KICKOFF - from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., come to the library and fill out a survey and tellus how we can improve our services. You'll be entered into a drawing scheduled the very next day, April 11th, and the chance to win a cool prize.  Now, that's not all that's happening on this day!

    The Tuesday of every annual National Library Week is set to honor librarians. It's called NATIONAL LIBRARY WORKERS' DAY.  You probably already know how ridiculously awesome the Pearl Library staff is, don't you? Of course you do! Sooo, from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. We want you to stop by the library, enjoy a snack and tell us why your favorite librarian is a star.

   Drum roooooollll please. This one is a biggie!  The Friends of the Pearl Library along with the Chapter 1 Book Club present award-winning, local mystery and suspense writer, John M. Floyd. Uh-huh. Right here on Tuesday April 11th at 6 p.m. Patsy, the Chapter 1 Book Club facilitator has a fine program set up. John will talk about this latest book, Dreamland and sign books. The program is free. There will be light refreshments and door prizes.

    Hopping right along, Bingo for Books is Thursday April 13th at 6 p.m. Celebrate National Library Week with a game of Bingo and a chance to win your choice of a variety of books.

Whew! All this hopping has me feeling a little hungry. Oh great! We have that covered too. Free POPCORN! On Friday, April 14th end National Library Week with free popcorn from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Come by and meet your library staff. We will be serving up this wonderful treat! Can you dig it? Sure you can!

Speaking of digging, there's nothing bunnies love more than carrots! YUM-O! Covvverrred! Yes, Amy's Simply Crafts - free adult program - will be making Easter Carrots Rice Krispie Treats at 6 p.m. on Thurs. April 20. No reservation is required and all ingredients supplied!  

Well, maybe you are into a different type of digging. It is that time of year when gardening is becoming the center of attention. Wouldn't you know that the Pearl Library has a great program to help you out. The Rankin County Master Gardeners will be at the library on Thursday April 27th at 6 p.m. to share expert gardening tips. All free. 

Really impressive stuff going on at the Pearl Library! All programs are free! You don't want to miss out on anything.

These Boots Are Made For...TOURING!!!

    The Pearl Public Library’s Chapter 1 Book Club presents author and Pearl native, Kathy Zebert, Thursday, October 6 at 6 p.m.; the first stop of her Red Boot Tour. Zebert will talk about her writing and do a book signing           

     Zebert, now a resident of Chattanooga, TN, just published the third installment of her popular Callie and Dom series, Hand In Hand which came out on September 15. She’ll talk about all three books which include Incredulity (September 2015) and Madame Court Reporter (April 2016).  

    

       Zebert, also a jewelry maker and baker, will be giving away, in a drawing, a piece of original boot jewelry. Complimentary specialty chocolates will be given to all attendees. 

         After the Pearl Library stop, Zebert will stop in Natchitoches, LA, Washington, DC, and Atlanta, GA for other business in conjunction with the Red Boot Tour.

        The program is free. No reservations required. All are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be provided.

BROWN BAG PROGRAM GOES OUTER SPACE IN PEARL!

During the Pearl Public Library's Brown Bag program on Friday, July 31, local author, Glen Stripling shared his Sci-Fi book about the fictitious planet Chronosia that he published in 2008, It was a good turnout. Laughter could be heard throughout the library as the audience was having such a great time!  Reference Supervisor and Adult Program Coordinator, Misty Shook did a fantastic job of welcoming the public and serving up fine refreshments!

There will be a Skype visit with author Miranda Beverly-Whittemore, the author of three novels, Bittersweet, Set Me Free, and The Effects of Light plus the short story ”Frito-Lay.”

The meeting is Thursday,  Aug. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Pearl Public Library!  You don't need a reservation and you don't even have to be a member of the Chapter 1 Book Club. Just come on by. Cecelia will have light refreshments and great discussion  for you. And, as always, there will be door prizes too!

A FAVORITE MS AUTHOR AT THE PEARL LIBRARY!

Popular, Mississippi author, John Floyd, will be the guest speaker at the Pearl Public Library's Brown Bag program Friday, Jan. 23 at noon. He will also be signing copies of his short story collection, Fifty Mysteries: The Angela Files.  Bring your lunch. Drinks and dessert are furnished by the Friends of the Pearl Library.

Floyd, a Rankin County resident and a graduate of Mississippi State University, has won the coveted Derringer Award for short mystery fiction.  In Fifty Mysteries, sheriff Charles "Chunky" Jones is up to his crime solving speed with retired school teacher, Angela "Angel" Potts helping him.

    

Floyd began writing professionally in 1994 and has published over 1,000 stories and features in widely-read publications like Woman’s World, Alfred Hitchcock's  Mystery Magazine, and The Saturday Evening Post. He teaches creative writing at Millsaps College’s Enrichment Program in Jackson.    Floyd is a former Air Force captain and worked for IBM Corporation for thirty years. He and his wife, Carolyn, have three grown children and six grandchildren and live in Brandon.

Come on by and join in the fun. The Brown Bag program is free and open to everyone.

PEARL LIBRARY'S BROWN BAG ENGAGING!

Mississippi author, Joe Lee, owner of Dogwood Press in Brandon, was the guest speaker at the Pearl Public Library's Brown Bag program on Friday. 

Director's Cut (2014) is Joe Lee's fifth installment of the critically acclaimed Oakdale suspense series. It is his seventh novel. 

"Joe Lee is a great speaker," said Eleanor. "He made me want to read all of the suspense series he's written! He really drew me in!"

There are always great programs going on at the Pearl Public Library. Don't forget the bag of books for $1 book sale going on right now. All the books you can fit into a bag. The proceeds go to benefit the Friends of the Pearl Library.

PEARL LIBRARY PRESENTS JOE LEE'S "DIRECTOR'S CUT"!

The Pearl Public Library presents popular Mississippi author Joe Lee as the Brown Bag program guest speaker on Fri., Oct. 24 at 12-noon.

He will be discussing his latest work, Director’s Cut, (2014) the fifth of the critically acclaimed Oakdale suspense series. It is his seventh novel. A book signing will follow.

        

Lee, owner and Editor-in-Chief of Dogwood Press in Brandon, has appeared at the library before, and is an audience favorite.  “We’re happy to have Joe Lee back at the Pearl Library,” said Eleanor Jones who's in charge of adult programming at the library.  “He’s such a great asset to the community and to Mississippi. We can’t wait to hear about Director’s Cut.”

In Director’s Cut, Tripp Kelly is a laid back film professor at the University in Oakdale. He has everything. He’s popular among the student and faculty body. He’s newly and happily married to a former student named Dana. He loves his work which includes spearheading an annual, well attended independent film festival. He’s just a happy guy, and couldn’t be happier. He’s also a serial killer!

BARBIE BASSETT TOPS ADULT SUMMER READING PROGRAM AT THE PEARL PUBLIC LIBRARY!

The Pearl Public Library's Summer Reading Program - full of fun, free, no reservations required events - kicks off Mon. June 2. The Adult Theme is Literary Elements.

How better to celebrate Literary Elements than to bring in a local author. But, NOT just any author mind you.

The featured headliner is local celebrity and everybody's favorite meteorologist, Barbie Bassett, who will be the guest speaker at the library's Brown Bag program Fri. June 27 at 12 -noon. Bring your lunch. Refreshments and drinks provided.

Bassett will talk about and sign her new book Carry An Umbrella When There's No Rain in the Forecast: 365 Days of Living by Faith.  

"We are so honored and extremely excited to have Barbie as part of our Summer Reading Program," says Eleanor Jones, the library's Reference Supervisor and Adult Programs Coordinator. "She is loved by many and is a wonderful writer. This is a great opportunity for people to come, meet her for free.  You can't beat that! Also anyone that is interested, can buy one of her books and have her sign it for them. That would be something to treasure forever!"

More Literary Elements are celebrated at the Chapter 1 Book Club gathering, Thurs. June 12 at 6 p.m. with a discussion on Defending Jacob, a legal thriller by William Landay. Light refreshments and door prizes included.

Also on tap for June's Adult Summer Reading celebration is a special Simply Crafts night - headed up by Eleanor - showing how to make gorgeous Mercury Glass (also called Silvered Glass) on Tues. June 10 at 6 p.m. All materials supplied. 

On Fri. June 13 at 1 p.m., senior adults can enjoy a movie at the library during Senior Friday Flicks.

Hey, how about a chance to win a $50 Walmart gift card?! Sounds good doesn't it! Then get in on Literary Elements Tic-Tac-Toe starting Mon. June 2. Read books and magazines for a chance to win this fabulous prize!

Throughout the month of June and the entire span of the Summer Reading Program, which ends Thurs. July 10, there will be crossword puzzles and quizzes that come with a chance to win a prize from the library's Summer Reading prize vault!

Author John Floyd will be discussing his latest book Deception. The short fiction of John M. Floyd has appeared in The Strand Magazine, Woman's World, Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, and many other publications. A Derringer Award winner and former Air Force captain, John spent thirty years with IBM and now teaches writing courses in the Continuing Education department at Millsaps College. He and his wife Carolyn live in Mississippi.Refreshment will be served.

Deception is not only the name of this book, or the title of one of the tales inside. It might be said that deception is also the central theme of the hundreds of short stories John M. Floyd has written and published over the past eighteen years. Many are mysteries and some represent other genres (fantasy, Western, romance, etc.), but all of them involve trickery and suspense and Hitchcockian plot reversals. In many ways, this collection picks up where his previous book, Clockwork, left off. Here are thirty more delicious stories of mystery, intrigue, and betrayal. And although Floyd has often said he loves twist endings, the surprises here are not limited to the final pages or paragraphs: they also happen throughout the stories. If his fiction has one common denominator, it is the uncertainty built into each tale, that tingling feeling of not knowing which direction the plot is about to take. In addition to all the standalone adventures, this collection features (as did the first three books) several lighthearted mysteries starring retired schoolteacher Angela Potts and small-town sheriff Charles Chunky Jones. Pearl Library starts National Library Week off with glasses and parties!

Yesterday was a huge day for us at the Pearl Library! For starters, it was Dress Like a Librarian Day! Here are a few shots of our supervisors hamming it up in the stacks...

(You have no idea how happy all of us were to don our glasses and official-looking skirts. Fun fact: one of the librarians pictured to the side is actually wearing a skirt that was given to her by ANOTHER librarian at a state library agency. The force of the library was strong with us yesterday!)






While all of the fun dressing up was going on, we were also doing what we normally do as librarians, which means that we were checking books out to patrons, manning the computer lab, running our regular story times, and preparing for programs. Here's a photo of our Children's supervisor giving one of the children's clerks some information about  an upcoming story time.






As late afternoon approached, we had to kick it into serious work mode to prepare for programs. Our children's department hosted Sarah Frances Hardy, who read her picture book Puzzled by Pink to a room full of kids decked out in princess outfits, fairy wings, jeans, pajamas, or whatever they wanted to wear to the Puzzled by Pink Party!

Finally, the adults ended the night with delicious refreshments (inspired by Pinterest, of course!) and a reading by Mississippi's cartoonist-laureate, Marshall Ramsey, who read to us from his book and from his blog, which can be found at http://marshallramsey.com/. 

Wow! What a day! For those of you who joined us, we thank you, and we hope you had a great time! National Library Week at the Pearl Library

We have so much coming up at the Pearl Library that I hardly know where to start!

Next week, we go into overdrive with so many events at the library in honor of National Library Week. On Tuesday, April 16th, all of the staff members (well, all of the willing staff members) are going to be dressed like stereotypical librarians (Hair buns, glasses, pencil skirts, the whole deal)! The public is welcome to join in this fun occasion!

Also, our children's department will be having a Puzzled by Pink party on Tuesday the 16th at 5:00 p.m., at which author Sara Frances Hardy will be reading her book by that name. Children are welcome to come dressed up in pink or in all black, or in anything they would want to wear to a party! Refreshments generously provided by the Pearl Chamber of Commerce.

On the 16th, famed cartoonist and local celebrity Marshall Ramsey will ALSO be visiting us! He'll be in the meeting room at 6:00 p.m., reading from his new book, Fried Chicken and Wine. We're so excited for him to come read with us! Refreshments generously provided by the Pearl Chamber of Commerce.

Next, on Thursday, April 18th at 12:00 p.m., James Meredith will be here speaking about his newest book, A Mission from God: A Memoir and Challenge for America. I was so excited when my branch manager told me that she had met and spoken with Mr. Meredith. He has done so much to promote racial equality in this state and country, and we are thrilled to have him come to the Pearl Library. Refreshments will be served (again by generous donation from the Pearl Chamber of Commerce, so come on over during your lunch break!

Finally, we'll end National Library Week 2013 on Friday, April 19th with a very special Brown Bag Luncheon, in which the Mississippi Department of Archives and History will come talk to us about the Eudora Welty House and Collection. This is going to be a phenomenal presentation, and you won't want to miss it. Bring your sack lunch and meet us in the meeting room at 12:00 p.m. We'll have light refreshments and drinks provided by the Friends of the Pearl Library!

It's sure to be a crazy, exciting, and fun week around here next week. We hope you'll come hang out with us and enjoy some of these great programs. See you then!!

Pearl Chapter 1 Book Club Honors Award Winning Author

Chapter 1 and the Friends of the Pearl Library are jointly honoring the Mississippi Poetry Society's 2012 Poet of the Year, Pearl's own Pat Jordan.  Pat and others will be reading from her new book The Tender Gift.  Everyone is invited to attend this tribute to Pat who battled cancer while writing this collection.  Her fight is ongoing which makes this event extra special to all who know her indomitable spirit.

 

The tribute and poetry readings will be followed by  reception and an opportunity to purchase The Tender Gift at only $10 each.

Jo S Baggett, author of "Miracles and Blessing Only Come to Those Who Notice Them" will be discussing her book at the Flowood Library. There will be a book signing to follow.

At this month's Brown Bag lunch, (Friday, June 22 @ noon) Mississippi storyteller Bill Patrick presents, The World's Most Renowned Train Wreck: A True Story of Casey Jones. Sounds interesting!
