International Games Week

         International Games Week started out as a simple idea, can you set a world record by having the most number of people playing the same game, at the same time, on the same day at libraries around the world? Jenny Levine and Scott Nicholson sparked the idea in 2007. They called it National Game Day. In 2012, the name changed from National Games Day to International Games Day, then in 2017, it changed names again to what we now know, International Games Week. The event has grown to include all seven continents.

    The date for this year's International Games Week is November 7-13, 2021. During this week, libraries from around the world participate in local and international activities. The events vary by location. Past events would include a Rock Band concert, Mario Kart Tournaments, and simple board games. Things have changed a little bit with COVID-19. This year they have included some downloadable games for you to print out and play.

    Did you know that your library system has games for the following systems; Wii Gaming Console, Playstation Gaming Console, Xbox Gaming Consoles, and the Nintendo Gaming Systems? If you are 18 and older, all you need is a current library card. You are allowed to check out 2 games at a time and you are allowed to keep them for one (1) week. As the systems change, we strive to keep up with the current games. 

   On a personal note, games have evolved since I was a child. My first gaming system was the old Atari system. We loved that game system. My children have grown up with the Super Nintendo to the Nintendo Switch and much more. Now both of my youngest boys play RPG online with their friends and people all across the county. There is something to be said about the classic board games. When the weather gets bad and we think the lights are going to go out, we break out the battery-powered lanterns and some of our favorite board games.

Minecraft

March is already here and with a new month comes new events! March 1-7 is Teen Tech Week. This week is meant for teenagers to improve their knowledge with different technology they can find at the library. These may include DVDs, databases, audiobooks, videogames, and other technology that is provided by the library.

In the month of March, Sebastopol Public Library is hosting Minecraft for 4 days to celebrate Teen Tech Week. Come join us, bring your kids, or someone you know to enhance creativity while interacting with others in the world of Minecraft!

The Freedom Summer Murders by Don Mitchell

In June of 1964, three idealistic young men (one black and two white) were lynched by the Ku Klux Klan in Mississippi. They were trying to register African Americans to vote as part of the Freedom Summer effort to bring democracy to the South. Their disappearance and murder caused a national uproar and was one of the most significant incidents of the Civil Rights Movement, and contributed to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. THE FREEDOM SUMMER MURDERS will be the first book for young people to take a comprehensive look at the brutal murders of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner, through to the conviction in 2005 of mastermind Edgar Ray Killen.

A Wreath for Emmett Till by Marilyn Nelson

Events That Changed the Course of History: Mississippi Becoming a State 200 Years Later by Amanda Hutchins

Two hundred years ago, on Dec. 10, 1817, Mississippi became the 20th state to join the Union. Follow Mississippi on its long path to statehood, from the habitation of the Chickasaw, Choctaw and other tribes dating all the way back to 10,000 B.C., to its first European settlement in 1699, to eventually becoming a U.S. territory after the Revolutionary War.

However, Mississippi only enjoyed its status as a state for about 43 years before its citizens voted to secede from the Union in early 1861, just a few short months before the beginning of the Civil War. In this book, you will learn just why Mississippi seceded, how the state fared during the war, and how it dealt with reconstruction after the Confederacy was dissolved.

From the development of the Blues, to the Civil Rights Movement, to the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, there have been a great number of changes, both good and bad, in Mississippi in the past century, and there are sure to be more to come. Take a closer look at the Magnolia State's history and learn how its past has shaped the culture and people of Mississippi today.

June Summer Library Programs for Morton Library

Summer is upon us and we are ready for our AMAZING Summer Programs!

The theme this summer is A Universe Of Stories so we are exploring space,

planets, aliens and getting ready for a great summer.

Every Tuesday Morning At 10:30 we will have

  Pre-School Storytime

June 4th: Space Ships

June 11th: Alien Crafts

June 18th: Rockets

June 25th: Aliens

K- 6th Grade

June 6th: The Farm Bureau will be here at 2 pm

June 13th: The CMRLS Puppets will be here at 2 pm

June 20th: We will be making an Alien Craft at 5 pm

June  27th: We will be having a very special event at 2 pm!

We will have a LIVE  feed from the NASA Space Station

with the Astronauts! 

We will also be making Galaxy Slime.

This event will last approx. 1 1/2 hours

Teen

June 20th: We will be making Galaxy Snow Globes at 2 pm

( you have to sign up for this event ahead of time .)

Family

June 6th:  At 5 pm The Hattiesburg Zoo will be here.

Teen Read Week - Oct. 14-20

"LOL @ your library" during Teen Read Week 2007

Teen Read Week is a national literacy initiative aimed at teens, their parents, librarians, and educators. It is celebrated each year during the third week of October. Since 1998, Teen Read Week has encouraged teens to make time to read for the fun of it; use their local library to discover their interests; and get reading materials and participate in events at their school or public library.

Teen Read Week is administered by the Young Adult Library Services Associations (YALSA), the fastest grouwing division of the American Library Association. For 50 years YALSA has been the world leader in selecting reading, listening, and viewing for teens.
