April at the Morton Library

 If you need to try and find something new to read, stop by the library and pick a book from the jar to try.  They are color-coded by genre of the book or just grab one for something totally different.  We will also be having National Library Week so we will be having a lot of great activities online for all ages.  We will also have take-home crafts to pick up in the library for all ages and even a family craft for the whole family to make together. Come check out a family movie and make some snacks and spend quality time together as a family! 

We would like to thank all of our Friends of the Morton  Library for all that they do for us all year long and would like to invite others to become a Friend of the Library and receive special library benefits and help to make our library the best it can be! We need your help to do this! Memberships can be picked up at the library. The enrolment fee for joining is Students $1, individuals $5, family $10, and a business $25 per year. This is a great way to help out your local library!

We are slowly trying to update the inside of the library to make it more enjoyable for you so come by and see the progress!

October 2019 Taylorsville Timeline To Do's

Outrageous October programming is coming to your Library in Taylorsville. Listed below are some of the October events we have planned for you to mark off of your To Do List.

October is the month we celebrate all things Teens with TeenTober. Here are some of the events we have coming up at the library here in Taylorsville.

For the entire month of October we invite Teens to come into the library and put your artistic twist on a bookmark and then step over to our YA area and put your mark on our table sized coloring page. On Wednesday, October 16th at 3:30 we will be dipping tiles to make marble-dipped coasters.

For our Magnolia Monday - Make & Take, Kindergarten to 6th grade children, we will be painting pumpkins on Monday, October 7th @ 3:30.

Each Wednesday at 11:00 am will be our Preschool Story Time.

Our Friends of the Library Chapter invites you to join them on Tuesday, October 8th at 3:30, for their monthly meeting to discuss upcoming events and ways to help the library make them a success.

The week of October 20th to October 26th is Friends of the Library Week. The library staff will be hosting a reception on Tuesday, October 22nd at 2:00 to thank our current members for all they do for our library and welcome any new comers who would like to join our chapter here in Taylorsville.

All CMRLS libraries will be closed Monday, October 14th in observance of Columbus Day.

As the fall season approaches, come 'Fall Into' some great programming at your Library in Taylorsville. Listed below are some of the September events we have planned for you to mark off of your To Do List.

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month. "A library card brings stories to life!" We would like to encourage each teacher in our community to come in and sign-up for a library card for your classroom as well as your personal use. As always, we encourage everyone to have a library card to access all the various services our library has to offer the community.

To encourage our young elementary age readers to sign-up for a library card, Elephant & Piggie will be visiting Taylorsville Elementary School on Tuesday, September 10th at 10:30 am. Elephant & Piggie are just two of the interesting characters from the children's author Mo Willems.

Each Wednesday at 11:00 am will be our Preschool Story Time. Our Fabulous Fall

April 2019 Taylorsville Timeline To Do's

Let this April be a time of To Do's at your Library in Taylorsville. Listed below are some of the Awesome April events we have planned for you to mark off of your To Do List.

April 7^th thru April 13^th we will be celebrating National Library Week throughout our system. Here at Taylorsville we will be honoring our patrons of the community with a reception at the library. This will be a ‘come and go’ event on Friday, April 12^th from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

Our county wide event for National Library Week will include the Mize, Polkville and Raleigh libraries. During this event patrons are encouraged to come in and write a Six Word Story. This event stems from the story of Ernest Hemingway winning a bet that he could write a short story only six words long. His story has a beginning, a middle and an end. The story is “For sale. Baby shoes. Never worn”. We are inviting all our patrons to come in and use their writing skills to write their own Six Word Story. This event begins April 8^th thru April 13^th with the winner announced on Monday, April 15^th. A $25 dollar gift card will be awarded to the winner.

Children’s Book Week will be observed beginning April 30^th thru May 5^th. For every children’s book your child reads, their name will be entered into a drawing for a jar of candy. The drawing will be held May 13^th. This year is the 100^th Anniversary of Children’s Book Week so I’m betting there might be 100 pieces of candy in the jar!

Each Wednesday at 11:00 am will be our Preschool Story Time. Our Awesome April themes are:

Show Us Your Books!

February is Library Lover’s Month, and the Forest Public Library is announcing one of its most ambitious promotions of the year: SHOW US YOUR BOOKS! Throughout the month of February, the Friends of the Forest Public Library, along with other library partners, will be participating in a book drive goal of 100 new nonfiction books to update the library’s collection. Librarian Dianne McLaurin explains the purpose for the book drive. “We are asking as many individuals, businesses, organizations, and supporters as possible to donate one (1) new nonfiction book to the library during the month of February. Just one! Despite continued reductions, the library’s book budget sustains the fiction areas of the library with bestsellers and favorite authors; however, the budget to purchase new nonfiction is almost nonexistent. This collection is vital to the library’s relevance and circulation, which is why we are so excited about the upcoming book drive. We want people to show us their passions, show us their interests, show us their love, and show us their books!”

According to McLaurin, an old, irrelevant, out-of-date nonfiction collection sends us message that a library is all of those things, too. "We often hear that libraries are not a bookstores, but we are not museums either. In this age of digital design and colorful graphics, covers make a huge difference to a patron perusing a shelf. We have a responsibility to provide patrons with the most current and attractive resources available. The idea of that "old book smell" does not apply when a library's goal is to be a modern conduit of information."

The book drive begins February 1^st and ends with a Mardi Gras Party on Fat Tuesday! Each person, business, organization, or supporter who purchases one new nonfiction book or gives a donation for a single book purchase receives Mardi Gras beads and an invitation to attend. The program will feature New-Orleans style food and music, along with a display of the new collection.  According to McLaurin, the Mardi Gras theme is part of the promotion. “Last year, the library received a large donation of Mardi Gras beads – bags full of beads. We didn’t know how we would ever use them, then we came up with the idea…Beads for Books! Show us your books, and we will throw you our beads! We have a container filled with beads in the center of the library, so we can accommodate plenty of books."

McLaurin stated that additional information on the donation process is available at the library; however, she explained the basics. “Donations can cover any subject from flea markets to finance, from Legos to law, from baking to banking, from tattoos to technology, from religion to real estate, from sports to sewing, from dinosaurs to drawing. Whatever your career, hobby or interest, show us your books! Parents and grandparents may also wish to donate books for the juvenile nonfiction collection on behalf of the children in their families, as well as teachers for the grades and subjects they teach. We have an extensive subject list available at the front desk.”

Several options are available to anyone who wants to purchase a book, since not everyone is able to visit a bookstore during the month of February. New nonfiction books can be purchased directly from online websites such as Barnes and Noble and Amazon. If anyone isn’t sure how to order online, the staff at the library can find books based on specific interests and within a donation range, then choose a book according to what we have and what we need. During the cataloging process, a book plate will be placed at the front of the book with the name of donor and the year. Many nonfiction books range from $20-25, which might not seem like much for one individual, business, or organization; however, multiply that amount by 100, and the contribution to the community is invaluable.

Central Perks for CMRLS Friends

Join the FRIENDS of Your CMRLS Library and receive perks to be used throughout the membership year!

Our FRIENDS make materials, equipment, and activities possible during the year with membership dues, donations, and book sales. All dues and proceeds from book sales go into your library for these much-needed items. The FRIENDS also sponsor, coordinate, and conduct programs for adults, teens, and children during the year, the largest of these are National Library Week and Summer Library Program. You may be as active as you wish with the FRIENDS of Your Library or you may choose to simply be an advocate for Your Library in your community. Library advocacy is an often overlooked task, but one with great impact on the library and community. For instance, how many of your community leaders know that nearly 80% of the citizens of Rankin, Scott, Simpson, and Smith Counties hold a CMRLS library card? That is important information your community and its leaders need to know!

FRIENDS’ memberships vary between libraries but most begin as low as $2.00 for students. Central Perks is worth a total of $12.00 in FREE fines and copies. Everyone can use perks like that!

FOBL Supports the Brandon Library with Activities

Fall Book Sale Weekend is sponsored by the Friends of the Brandon Library. The sale will be Friday, September 30, from 10-5, and Saturday, October 1, from 10-4. We will have Bag Day on Monday, October 3, from 10-8. For Monday only, books will be sold by the bag or by the box - $5 a bag or $10 a box.

Also on Saturday, October 1, we will have fun with Race Day. We will be racing something all day long! The schedule is as follows:

     At the end of the season, we will put all the entries back in the big bowl and draw for the grand prize - an iPad Mini. 

     There will also be additional prizes given away at that time - three Library Buck Awards of $10 each. Library Bucks can be used for fines or for Book Sale items. Library Bucks can not be used for debt collect charges.

Celebrate Spring @ Your Library

Spring is here! And, it’s time to celebrate!

The Brandon Public Library will be hosting Celebrate Spring @ Your Library on April 23 from 10-4. Many free activities will be available for the family.

Come see our Antique Car Show. Bring your camera and/or your antique car.  Enjoy meeting other antique car owners. No entrance fee is required. 

Step back in time to the 19^th century as you take a walking tour of the Rankin County Historical Society Museum. These historical buildings, a house and a general store, will be open for the day and will provide a snapshot of life in the era of pioneers.

The Children’s Department will have activities for kids in the children’s area of the library. There will be activities celebrating Money Smart Week that starts April 23. We will also have Free Duplo Play and Free Lego Play during the day.

Bring your IRS documents, your divorce decrees, and all your other sensitive documents to the library starting April 23. The Friends of the Brandon Public Library is introducing The Shredder to the community. The Shredder is a new shredding service that will be offered free of charge. If you want to take your shredded documents home with you, then trash bags are available at $1.00 a bag.

Come join us for our Spring Book Sale. Used books and other items will be on sale Friday, April 22, from 10 to 5, and Saturday, April 23, from 10 to 4. Bag Day will be Tuesday April 26, from 10-8. On bag day, you can buy books for $5 a bag or $10 a box. The Friends of the Brandon Library sponsor the sale and proceeds will go to support your library.

On Saturday, the Friends will have hot dogs, chips, popcorn, water, and sodas available for sale. All proceeds will benefit the Brandon Library.

During the week of April 11-16, we celebrated National Library Week. First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. 

The Brandon Public Library is a public research facility where you can check out books, DVDs, audio books, cake pans, and other items free of charge. Free eBooks and music are available through our website at www.cmrls.lib.ms.us. Let us help you get started today.

We provide public access computers with free internet access. Free WiFi is also available at no cost to you. Fax and scanning services are available for $1 per page.

For our college students, the Brandon Public Library proctors exams.  Students, with prior arrangement with their professors, can take exams here at the library. There is no charge for this service. 

We listen to the needs of the community.  The Brandon Public Library is now offering Notary Services.  This service will be provided by the FOBL and will be available Monday thru Friday and even Saturday by appointment. There will be a minimal fee of $3.
