Celebrating Youth Creativity All Month At The Pearl Public Library!

March is National Youth Art Month.

We take that very seriously at the Pearl Public Library!

This is the twelfth year that the library has invited Pearl School District students to canvass the library with their wonderful creations!

Below are just a few of the displayed art pieces these talented students of all ages have created!

The art stays up all month long for viewing during library hours.  Please do yourself a favor and come take a look!  The heart and soul all these students poured into their work is awesomely inspiring! 

Mark your calendar! On Monday, March 23 from 5:30 to 7:00 the library and the Friends of the Pearl Library, will host an official youth art exhibit night complete with a reception! It's free and ALL are invited!

Don't miss out! 

And don't miss out on BINGO FOR BOOKS on Thursday. March 12 at 6 p.m. It's a free program with a chance to win books, dvds and video games. Light refreshments are provided. Remember that BINGO FOR BOOKS is every second Thursday of the month!

Hey, it's time for a BALLOON REPORT!

Just so you know, the renegade balloon that deserted the pack on Friday, Feb. 14 is still hugging the ceiling. But don't you worry. That bad boy is traveling. It started out right above the circulation desk. It's coming down the other direction toward reference! We are watching it to see when it will make the great descent! LOL!

A Bonanza of Art That Can't Be Missed at the Pearl Library!

Come and enjoy creative art by Pearl Public Schools' students displayed throughout the  Pearl Public Library the whole month of March in observance of Youth Art Month! 

This is the eleventh year the Pearl Library has honored the students' talents during Youth Art Month by exhibiting their art and holding a Friends of the Pearl Library sponsored reception which is FREE and open to everyone. That will be Thurs. March 21, at 5 p.m. and will include special choir and theatrical performances by some of the students said Kristen Hillman, the Pearl Library's Youth Services Supervisor.  She said her whole department is in full ART mode!

"All March long, the Youth Services Department at the Pearl Library is celebrating all things art! We are working on decorating the entire children’s section using the theme 'Be ART-rageous!,'" she said. "It’s a work in progress at the moment, but we are quickly gearing up for our annual Youth Art Month Reception, a night that celebrates all the fine arts that Pearl Public Schools has to offer, such as choir, band, theater, and visual arts. For now, we have a banner (made from paint sample cards you get at paint and hardware stores) that announces youth art month, and Pete the Cat and Groovy Joe are expressing themselves through all the fun things they love to do, like playing the guitar and painting a groovy masterpiece!"

You don't want to miss out on all things "Art-rageous!" at the Pearl Library.

Art on Exhibit @ Flowood Library

The Flowood Library offers an opportunity to see a gallery of exhibits by local artists.  Currently, we have several paintings available to be viewed by the public free of charge.  Paintings of tigers, but no lions or bears.  Oh, my.  Parrots, owls, cardinals and other birds of a feather such as seagulls and pelicans.  We have polar bears putting on quite a show.  An assortment of fish accompanied underwater by sea turtles.  We can enjoy the peaceful scenery of houses on the beach or we can see a forest in the trees.  Several other critters are represented in this display.

Come to the Flowood Library and enjoy our art gallery of paintings created by a local artist.  The exhibit is open during regular library hours and is free to the public.

YAM! BAM! Thank You...Young, Creative Artists!

Yes, That's right. Thank you Pearl School District students for sharing your creative side during Youth Art Month (YAM) at the Pearl Public Library! The library has been covered in the students' art all month long! 

This is the tenth year that the Pearl Library has embraced National Youth Art Month by showcasing the Pearl students' art during the month of March. It's great to see family members trickle into the library proudly looking for their loved ones' art!   

On Thursday, March 29 at 5 p.m. there will be a free reception, hosted by the Pearl Library and the Friends of the Pearl Library! This serves as the "official" viewing of the art work.

Loads of people are expected to attend. 

We hope you bring the whole family out for this wonderful evening!

Remember it's free. No invitation needed. You don't want to miss it!

NWR Art Show Awards!

Winners Announced for NWRHS Art & Community Studio

The Art and Community Studio Classes of Northwest Rankin High School held it's 2nd annual artist's reception at the G. Chastaine Flynt Memorial Library on April 11th.

The theme, "Mississippi Landscapes," was inspired by Albert Smathers of Mississippi College and Mrs. Teresa Aikens of Northwest Rankin High School. They have worked together for the last 8 years. Smathers, a professional artist with over 30 years experience, visited the high school earlier this year to demonstrate his renowned techniques. His visit was so exhilarating for the students, Arts and Community Studio instructor Teresa Aikens, encouraged the students to take photographs of their favorite Mississippi locals and turn them into stunning works of art.

"This exhibit is part of the focus of the Art and Community Studio Classes," Aikens said. "The students work hard to make their art a visible part of the community." She added that in addition to the annual library exhibit of student paintings, the class also partners with community businesses and organizations to create artwork for permanent installations.

"This year, so many of our patrons engaged with the paintings, choosing their favorite and casting a vote," Ashley Biggs, Branch Manager of the G. Chastaine Flynt Memorial Library said. "The students, parents, school faculty, and library patrons had a wonderful time mingling at the reception and awards ceremony. It will be exciting to see those patrons who voted come back to see which pieces were be selected."

As part of the exhibit, which was installed on March 1st, library patrons were encouraged to vote for their favorite pieces. Nearly 100 votes were cast. Paintings will hang until April 30th. 

   

The library looks forward to hosting more paintings in the coming years! 

DOILYING AROUND MAKES GREAT CRAFT ART IN PEARL!

Doilies are great! Dainty, lacy and delicate, they are made of fabric or paper! You see them everywhere. Under beautiful cakes and other sweet treats, as head decorations and, sometimes, they are used to adorn clothing!  

Even when they don't have anything else going on, doilies are very beautiful to behold.  Like art. YES! That's it! ART!

The Pearl Public Library's own Lana, queen of Simply Crafts, thinks so too!  So, her Tues., Nov. 10 Simply Crafts at 6 p.m. features doilies on canvas.  "This craft is versatile in wall decor," she said. "You can frame it or you can put it up. Simply place the doily on the canvas, choose your color of spray paint and VOILA - a work of art!

That's not all. Lana also says it's really "therapeutic" too. Can't beat that with a stick!

Don't miss out. Remember, Simply Crafts is every second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. It's a free, adult program. No reservations needed and all materials are supplied!

Every year right about now, the Pearl Public Library transforms into an art gallery. Seriously! Proud students from the Pearl Schools will fill the library with their artful creations in celebration of National Youth Art Month.

The art will stay up the entire month of March so you'll have plenty of opportunities to come on by and see it.

On Tues. March 3 there's the huge annual Youth Art Month reception, honoring all the kids at 6 p.m. You really don't want to miss this!

BEAUTIFUL ART COLLECTION AT THE PEARL LIBRARY!

M.W. Stuart's There's Still Hope (Water Color)

As the first location for his 2014 Art Exhibits Tour, Mississippi artist M.W. Stuart is showing his Ross Barnett Collection at the Pearl Public Library through the month of May. 

Stuart is hosting an opening reception at the library on Sat. May 24 from 11 a.m. to 3:00 p.m, to officially kick off his art tour, and he invites everyone to come.

Stuart has been painting most of his life. Capturing a feeling or emotion or thought is what he strives to do in creating his magnificent pieces he says on his Artist page at www.talon-art.com. "I also prefer to make a painting interesting in its color, contract and subtlety, rather than focusing on detail and realism."

You can view Stuart's art collection in the library's Meeting Room during normal library hours.  Don't miss this wonderful art exhibit!

Exquisite Hand Carved Wood Art Exhibit At The Pearl Library!

The Pearl Public Library is showcasing, Expressions in Wood, now through the month of February - in honor of Black History Month - the magnificent woodcarving art of Oklahoma native, George Berry, Sr. 

A hand carved dolphin, hippo, turtle, bison, pig and wolf are only a few that are among the breathtaking, wooden animals that grace the library's foyer. Waterfowl, eagles, owls and horses are onsite to admire as well. Hand carved lapel pins in the likeness of a hummingbird, butterfly and several leave pins are also in the exhibit.

Berry, now a resident of Pearl, moved to Mississippi in 1972 to teach industrial arts at the Piney Woods Country Life School where he retired in 1985. He's been carving wood since he was 6-years-old which means he has been creating art almost all his life. 

Berry shows a great appreciation of the beauty of wildlife through fine, delicate detail. His work is so impressively done, it's quite hard to believe it's actually hand carved. It seems almost impossible and truly demonstrates Berry's genius.

For those who love outdoor sports, hunting dogs and catfish are Berry's homage to Mississippi culture. 

An honoree of the Mississippi Arts Commission, Berry received the Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts for Artistic Achievement in 2001. Berry's wood carved sculptures are exhibited in numerous places in Jackson and Oklahoma and other private residences and offices throughout the U.S.

Berry is a charter member and Fellow of the Craftsmen's Guild of Mississippi and is on the Guild's Board of Directors.

You really do not want to miss a great opportunity to see the Expressions in Wood exhibit! The Pearl Library invites everyone to come by. If it's your first time to visit the library, take a look around and see everything your library has to offer!

Art in the Park 2011

The Simpson County Museum and Art Gallery, Inc., announces and invites the public to its Second Annual Art in the Park on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at Alice Davis Park, North Main Street, Mendenhall.

Presented in conjunction with “Mendenhall in May,” Art in the Park 2011 will feature the work of some twenty local and regional artists and artisans, including paintings, pottery, and crafts. In addition, several authors will be featured in the Park Gazebo.

The artists and artisans will have their works on display and available for sale. The Simpson County Museum and Art Gallery will have its limited edition 2011 Art in the Park T-shirt for sale. This year’s design features the work of local artist Leann Emrich. These will be available at the Museum and Art Gallery information booth in the park. The Simpson County Historical and Genealogical Society will also have an information booth with Simpson County historical and genealogical displays.

The Simpson County Museum and Art Gallery officers and members are excited about our association with Mendenhall in May and the continuing development and improvement in our Annual Art in the Park. We warmly invite the public to all the attractions of Mendenhall in May, including a visit with us at Art in Park 2011 as we celebrate and enjoy the cultural and historical richness of Simpson County and the Piney Woods Region of Mississippi.

Susan Weimer at the Flowood Library

Local artist, Susan Weimer, was discussing her art at the Flowood Library on October 14th. Ms. Weimer is currently displaying her artwork in Flowood's exhibit hallway. Susan brought her easel and chalks and sketched a portrait of patron Alean M. Adams (photo: right). Ms. Weimer sketches and colors with chalk and uses water to blend colors on her work space.

The conversation was lively. Ms. Weimer has an enjoyable personality with a great sense of humor. She served in the United States Navy during

World War II. Susan was too young to enlist on her own so she obtained her parent's signed approval. She was stationed at Jacks Air Base in Florida and served as a gunnery instructor.

Ms. Weimer (photo: left) went on to complete her Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts at Wooster College and Ohio University. She then received her Master's degree from Western Reserve University. Susan was offered an assistant professorship at Edinboro State

University where she then taught art. When Ms. Weimer retired, she returned to Mississippi's Gulf Coast where she purchased a small cottage. After Hurrican Katrina devastated the region, Ms. Weimer relocated to Rankin County where she is currently residing (photo: right: Dale Rose, Susan Wiemer, Alean M. Adams discuss art techniques).
