Third Thursday Always Entertaining at the Pearl Public Library.

You wanna know why?

Glad you asked!

Because it's MOVIE NIGHT, and Ben knows how to pick a big winner!

Third Thursday Flicks for January is Hoosiers showing Thurs. Jan. 16 at 5:45 p.m. on a big screen.  Enjoy light refreshments too!
In this 1986 movie Hoosiers, failed basketball Coach Norman Dale played by Gene Hackman finds himself in this tiny town of Hickory, Indiana and with a chance at redemption.

Hoosiers is a great story about a high school basketball team's long-shot attempt to win the state championship. The film is inspired by the true story of the 1954 Indiana state champions, Milan High School.

Nominated for two Oscars Hoosiers, also starring famed actors Dennis Hopper and Barbara Hershey, was hailed as one of the best sports movies of all time.

Come on in and be totally entertained with this big winner!

While we are talking about winning, don't forget about the January How-To Tuesday on Tues. Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. You'll get a change to learn about the City of Pearl while playing Pearl-Opoly!

What a wonderful chance to just have some good ol' fun while visiting with friends!
OMG! Visiting with friends! That reminds me!

MARK YOUR CALENDAR!

The Pearl Library's February Library Lover's Month star event is coming soon!

WOW! Making this Tin Punched Votive Candle sounds like a cool craft trip!

Hey, while we are tripping hahahah, come by the Pearl Library on Thurs. Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. for a really funny ride! One of the best Thanksgiving movies ever!

Yep! A good trip is what Neal Page (played by Steve Martin), a classy executive, had in mind in Planes, Trains and Automobiles! But, what he got instead was complete chaos as he was thrown together with Del Griffith (John Candy), a bumbling shower curtain ring salesman, in this ultimate Thanksgiving film!

These two totally different men, not to mention complete strangers, encounter some hilarious, and some quite infuriating situations!

But as life shows us oftentimes things are not as they seem. That's what makes the ending of this wonderful movie absolutely perfect for Thanksgiving! Just magical!

November's Third Thursday Flicks, a Holiday Favorite at the Pearl Public Library!

You just can't beat famed actors Steve Martin and John Candy in this 1987 Thanksgiving comedy.

In Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Neal Page (Martin) and Del Griffith (Candy) are two strangers that are thrown together by a crazy snowstorm during holiday travel.

Neal an uptight, successful executive and Del an underachieving, really laid back shower curtain ring salesman, go together like oil and water! Needles to say that Del annoys the mess out of Neal! Even as everything that could go wrong does, and Neal's grip on sanity - from time to time - seems to be slipping, the two end up forming a heartwarming bond.

A really great movie! Thumbs up all the way!

If you have never seen Planes, Trains and Automobiles, you'll have the chance on Thurs. Nov. 21. at 6 p.m. It's Ben's pick for November's Third Thursday Flicks.

A funny movie, a big screen and refreshments. What could be better? Well maybe if it were free...

IT IS FREE!

So, mark your calendars and plan on coming. It's wonderful, holiday entertainment for the whole family!

Don't miss out!

We'll see you there!

Summer Library Program Movie Night Takes You to the Moon at the Pearl Public Library!

Summer Library Program 2019, themed A Universe of Stories in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Moon Landing, wouldn't be complete without a "Moon" movie night at the Pearl Public Library!

So let me just tell ya the library is hooking you up! As the June installment of the monthly Third Thursday Flicks,  Apollo 13, rated PG will be shown on the big screen!

Hey, who doesn't love Tom Hanks?! Hanks played Astronaut Jim Lovell, but did you know that the famous, iconic phrase was actually "Houston we've had a problem" and not "Houston we have a problem"? True. It was altered to present tense in the film script.

A little useless trivia there! LOL!

Annnnywaaaaay, don't miss out on a fun evening!

"It's a great way to relax after getting off work," Ben Newell, the Pearl Library's Reference Supervisor and adult program coordinator says. "Come enjoy some popcorn and drinks and a free movie!"

We'll see you there!

High Noon Book Club
For the month of February, the High Noon Book Club will be reading the book The Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How it Changed America which is written by John M Barry.  This book tells about the history of the Great Flood of 1927 when the river overflowed its banks after a time of too much rain and the result was one of the worst floods in American history.
The last book that the High Noon Book Club read was titled Dispatches from Pluto written by Richard Grant. The entire book club really liked the book and would recommend it to anyone who is wanting to read about Mississippi written from the perspective of an outsider.
The Book club will meet on February 21st 12pm to 1pm at the Northwest Point Reservoir Library. All patrons are welcome to attend and bring a brown-bagged lunch of their choice. January Events at Pelahatchie Public Library

The Pelahatchie Public Library has several events scheduled for the remainder of this month.  One is the adult book club that meets Wednesday, January 16, at 9:30 a.m.  Our book club is in its sixth year and we have read almost 100 titles during that time.  This month's book for discussion is Jodi Picoult's novel, The Storyteller, a story set in present day with flashbacks to World War II.  As always, Ms. Picoult's story of a Nazi soldier living under an assumed name in the United States tugs at issues of morality; and if you're familiar with her novels, it has that little twist at the end that you may or may not have seen coming.

The other upcoming program is Ladies Movie Night.  Back by popular demand, on Thursday, January 24, at 6:30 p.m., we will show Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, rated PG-13.  The movie runs 114 minutes and was produced by Universal Studios.  There will be popcorn and drinks served for all who attend.

Stop By the Pearl Library, Swap Howdies with a Staffer during National Library Week and Win a Sweet Treat!

April is a big month for libraries everywhere. That's when National Library Week is celebrated. This year it's April 8 -14 with the theme "Libraries Lead."

You know what? Libraries as leaders is nothing new!

You see, back in 1958 is when the first National Library Week was observed by the American Library Association (ALA).

This is how it came about. Back in the 1950s folks were spending less time on reading books. Yep, they were into radio, television and music, especially musical instruments. Well, that really got the attention of the ALA and the American Book Publishers. They formed a nonprofit citizens organization called the National Book Committee in 1954.

Let me tell you this committee had some big goals that ranged from encouraging people to use their leisure time to read to "improving incomes and health" and "developing strong and happy family life."

See what I mean? Libraries as important role models for communities has been part of libraries' goals and accomplishments for years!

In 1957 a plan was developed for National Library Week in an effort to motivate people to read so that they would support and use libraries. In 1958 sporting the theme "Wake Up and Read!", the first National Library Week was observed.  National Library Week was observed again in 1959 and continued yearly. When the National Book Committee disbanded in 1974, the ALA assumed the lead sponsorship.

At the Pearl Library, the goal is to make National Library Week very special. So, in an effort to get patrons connected not only to the Pearl Library, but to library staffers, Amy, the adult program coordinator, has come up with a sweet, great way to do that!

Oh, yes! Come on in and introduce yourself to a staffer April 9 -13, write the staffer's name on a slip of paper provided for you and get a sweet treat in return.

That's not all Amy has up her sleeve. Check out some of the other great National Library Week events!

Do not miss out!

We'll see you there!
