Astronomy is for Everyone: The 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing Edition!

Join us on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at 6:00 pm for a special celestial event!

Astronomer Kevin Manning, a former consultant with NASA, has always been passionate about astronomy, and wants to share the excitement with you! 

Over the next 1 ½ hours, you’ll learn about the size and scale of the universe, the stars, and other celestial wonders using hands-on activities and assorted visuals.

Ages 8+.

Poetry 101 at Brandon Library

Are you a poet? Do you want to be? Not sure because you haven't had the time or the know-how to really get started?

You're in luck! Poet Tommy Little will be here at the Brandon Library hosting a workshop on the importance of mood and emotion in poetry, focusing mainly on the blank verse form.

If you want to hone your skills--or just want to come and enjoy the poetry--meet us here at 6:00 pm on Tuesdays, February 5, 12, 19, & 25!

Class #1 - Apron

• Fabric - 1 yard 45 inch wide for the main color
• 1/2 yd for the second color
• 1/2 yd fusible interfacing
• thread to match 
• usual sewing notions (if you're bringing your own machine)

Class #2 - The fold-up shopping bag

• 1 yard 45 inch wide fabric
• thread to match. 
• Usual sewing notions (if you're bringing your own machine)

Class #3 - Thumb-Finger Pot Holder

• We will use the scraps from the first two projects or two fabric pieces approximately 8 x 10 inches 
• 1 piece each of Insul-bright and quilt batting - 8 x 10 inches
• thread to match.

This is a list of the basic items needed for beginning sewing. Please put your name on all your supplies.

• Scissors – please be sure these will easily cut fabric.
• Seam ripper 
• Tape measure - 60 inches at least 
• Seam gauge 
• Water soluble disappearing ink pen FOR FABRIC or other marker for fabric 
• Pins and pin cushion 
• Hand sewing needles - sharps size 10 or an assortment of sizes
• Thimble 
• Large safety pin 
• Box or container for supplies 
• Needle threader - can be helpful if you have difficulty threading needles 
• Small sack for scraps/trash - bring this when attending a class 

Some stores sell preassembled kits containing many of these supplies. It is best not to purchase these as the scissors do not cut well and the needles and pins are not sharp enough to use without marring the fabric. Most all of these supplies should be available at fabric stores or Wal-Mart, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc.

If you are bringing your own sewing machine, please bring sewing machine needles - several sizes are very useful. Also, bring the instruction manual for the machine.

LAKE: Crafts aren't just for kids!

Young or old we all love to get our hands a little dirty and make something.  This month in Lake the adults and some young adults got the chance to do some painting. A huge shout out to our talented teacher Vickie Hester. I haven't found anything she can't do.  We try to do monthly crafts but this month was a huge success.  We hope to keep the momentum going through the summer and on into the fall.  We discussed other crafts we've wanted to try such as crocheting and even quilting.  What are you interested in?  If you have something that you have wanted to learn about but it hasn't been offered at your local library yet, don't be afraid to ask.  You might be surprised at what they can come up with for you.  Or you might find out it's being taught at a library right around the corner. And don't forget to check out our calendar of events where you can break down your search by branch, age category or perhaps a keyword that you looking for like knit or beading.  You might be surprised at what new adventure is already out there waiting on you.  

Pearl Library starts National Library Week off with glasses and parties!

Yesterday was a huge day for us at the Pearl Library! For starters, it was Dress Like a Librarian Day! Here are a few shots of our supervisors hamming it up in the stacks...

(You have no idea how happy all of us were to don our glasses and official-looking skirts. Fun fact: one of the librarians pictured to the side is actually wearing a skirt that was given to her by ANOTHER librarian at a state library agency. The force of the library was strong with us yesterday!)






While all of the fun dressing up was going on, we were also doing what we normally do as librarians, which means that we were checking books out to patrons, manning the computer lab, running our regular story times, and preparing for programs. Here's a photo of our Children's supervisor giving one of the children's clerks some information about  an upcoming story time.






As late afternoon approached, we had to kick it into serious work mode to prepare for programs. Our children's department hosted Sarah Frances Hardy, who read her picture book Puzzled by Pink to a room full of kids decked out in princess outfits, fairy wings, jeans, pajamas, or whatever they wanted to wear to the Puzzled by Pink Party!

Finally, the adults ended the night with delicious refreshments (inspired by Pinterest, of course!) and a reading by Mississippi's cartoonist-laureate, Marshall Ramsey, who read to us from his book and from his blog, which can be found at http://marshallramsey.com/. 

Wow! What a day! For those of you who joined us, we thank you, and we hope you had a great time! Pearl Library Snuggle Up and Read! Winners

This January and February, the Pearl Library held a reading contest for Young Adult and Adult patrons. The goal was simple: read the most books and win a big prize! And we were so impressed with our patrons-those who turned in reading logs read almost 500 books!

With a grand tally of 43 books read, Tabatha won the adult category. Here she is with me (Joy, the Reference Supervisor) and her gift, which included a back rest, a blanket, some coffee cups, a box of tea, a book light, some cozy socks, a cool candle, and a few other small prizes.Tabatha is one of our loyal patrons, and we're so excited that she read so many books and won this prize! Good job!

And here's a picture of Elizabeth, who read 128 books!!! That's amazing! Included in her prize were a back rest and a cozy blanket, along with socks, hot chocolate, a book light, a travel mug, a candle, and a cute notepad.Way to go, Elizabeth!

September Football Challenge Winner

Congratulations to Jasmin, the winner of the Pearl Public Library September football challenge! Jasmin won a fun tailgating package full of snacks and drinks, and all she had to do was fill out her name and tell the reference staff which football team she likes.
