Veteran's Day Tribute at the Flowood Library

Join us at the Flowood Library on Monday, November 7th at 6:00pm for a special Veteran's Day program! Colonel Riser will lead the NWR JROTC in presenting the colors. Local historian, Bill Patrick, will give a brief overview of a few notable Mississippi generals. Lastly, the NWR middle school 6th grade choir will perform. Florence Library Preschool Story Time

The Florence Public Library would like to invite you and your child to attend our weekly Preschool Story Time. Author Joe Lee Visits Florence Library.

Originally from Jackson, Mississippi, Joe Lee has a background in radio, television, and journalism. He is the Owner and Editor-in-Chief of Dogwood Press, a small but traditional publishing company in Brandon, Mississippi, and has published fellow Mississippi authors John M. Floyd, Jim Ritchie, Mike Windham, and Barbie Bassett.
Lee is the author of the legal thriller ON THE RECORD, the murder mystery DEAD AIR, JUDGMENT DAY, and THE MAGNOLIA TRIANGLE. The latter two are the first two volumes of a suspense series set in fictional Oakdale, Mississippi; Lee's latest novel, THE LONG ROAD HOME, is Part III of the series and was released in September, 2011. Lee is a graduate of Mississippi State University and lives with his family in Brandon, Mississippi.

Elizabeth Heiskell was born and raised in the Mississippi Delta, an agricultural area bordered by the Mississippi River where food and fun go hand in hand. With her passion for food, fun, and adventure, Elizabeth started her culinary journey with courses at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. Chef Heiskell has prepared food for such notables as the Duchess of York, Vice President Al Gore, and a host of Mississippi governors.

As Lead Culinary Instructor at the Viking Cooking School in nearby Greenwood, world headquarters of the Viking Range Corporation, she has represented Viking on exclusive SilverSea cruises through Spain, Portugal, and Hawaii, as well as television and public appearances, and a multitude of culinary events adding fun and vitality to every class she teaches.

She now maintains an active catering company of her own based in Cleveland, Mississippi, where she lives with her husband, Luke, a cotton farmer, and their three daughters.

In addition to sharing some delicious recipes, Ms. Heiskell signed copies of her latest book.

The Flowood Library is extremely excited to be presenting "Get Cookin' with the Flowood Public Library." "Get Cookin'" is a series of presentations by Mississippi Cookbook Writers. We are very fortunate to have three amazing local chefs willing to discuss their recipes. In order of appearance:

Ms. Heiskell will concentrate on speaking about tailgating . . . just in time for football season.

Whitney Miller--> Tuesday, October 25th at 6:30 pm. Poplarville native, Whitney Miller, will be discussing recipes from her latest book, Modern Hospitality: Simple Recipes with Southern Charm. Ms. Miller is the first winner of Fox TV's MasterChef contest which featured contestants from all over the country. Whitney was dubbed the "Pastry Princess" because of her talent with deserts.

Remembering 9/11

As the date draws near to the 10th anniversary of September 11th, 2001, we have created a touching display of the horrific events that occured. Take time to remember those affected by this tragedy.

Integrated Library System to be Upgraded

The libraries in your county no longer stamp cards or books with due dates; and yet customers check out, request, and return books in greater numbers today. Thanks to computer software known as an integrated library system, you and your libraries joined others across the nation using barcodes and scanners, computers, and even your cell phone to conduct library business. This technology has allowed Central Mississippi Regional Library System (CMRLS) to improve customer service, and track books and other materials more efficiently.
When this began 10 years ago, many staff and patrons balked at using computers to check out and request books. "The personal interaction with our customers will be gone," many said. However, the libraries have grown and CMRLS now has more than 120,000 library cardholders. "We have more time to give our customers than ever before," said one staff member. "Because of the computers we can help them find exactly what they are looking for, whether it is in the next county or across the country!"

It is time to update the integrated library system in CMRLS libraries. All computers and software have a lifespan, and few live more than 10 years. The system used in your libraries is and will continue to be a product of SirsiDynix, the world's leading provider of library automation solutions today. With the upgrade to the CMRLS system, less tech-savvy customers can look forward to natural language searching complete with 'spell check', while those who prefer to use their iPhone apps for everything will have the full power of the library catalog in the palm of their hand and may share their reading preferences with friends using Facebook. Many of the changes are staff related, but will also enhance the whole customer experience.

CMRLS Director Kaileen Thieling said, "The upgrade of the integrated library system is part of the long range plan adopted by the board of Supervisors and CMRLS Board of Trustees to use the latest technology to provide library service and customer service that is second to none."

For these changes to take place, library staff will need training and this unfortunately will mean closing the libraries. Libraries will close:

• Scott County branches, August 17
• Pelahatchie, Sandhill Pisgah, and Pucket, August 19
• Simpson County branches, August 22
• Brandon and Florence branches, August 26
• Pearl and Richland, September 2
• Flowood and Reservoir branches, September 6
• Smith County branches, September 13

The training dates are staggered to inconvenience customers as little as possible. Your CMRLS library card may be used at all public libraries in Rankin, Scott, Simpson, and Smith counties. For information regarding hours of operation and location of any CMRLS libraries visit the Internet at http://www.cmrls.lib.ms.us/ or call 601.825.0100.

All CMRLS libraries will close once more on September 26 and 27 for the actual migration from the old system to the new. The libraries will open their regular scheduled hours on September 28 and following with staff eager to help with any questions concerning the changes.

Chapter One Book Club @ Pearl

The Pearl Public Library’s Chapter 1 Book Club presents Mississippi author, John Floyd, of Brandon, Thurs. Sept. 8 for an evening full of his widely celebrated mystery fiction.

A former Air Force captain and IBM systems engineer turned fulltime writer, Floyd, a master of whodunits and surprise endings, is the author of numerous works. In addition to three books, Rainbow’s End (2006), Midnight (2008) and Clockwork (2010, he has written more than 1,000 short stories and features for publications such as The Strand Magazine, Woman’s World, Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine, and Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine. Floyd won the 2007 Derringer Award for short mystery fiction and has been nominated three times for the Pushcart Prize.

The evening begins with Floyd’s book signing from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. He’ll have copies of all three books available for sale. At 6:30 p.m., Floyd will join the Chapter 1 Book Club’s meeting for readings and discussion.

Simpson County Animal Rescue

The mission statement of the newly organized Simpson County Animal Rescue states: "To provide a loving and clean shelter to neglected, abused, and/or homeless domestic animals in Simpson County."
Simpson County Animal Rescue needs your help with:

THE PEARL PUBLIC LIBRARY STRIKES A MUSICAL CHORD OF PRESTIGIOUS, SMITHSONIAN MAGNITUDE

New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music, in a six Mississippi cities tour, will be showcased at the Pearl Public Library, a branch of the Central Mississippi Regional Library System, from Thurs. July 21 – Thurs. Sept. 1, 2011.

New Harmonies is part of the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street (MOMS) program. MOMS serves small-to-medium-sized communities by bringing Smithsonian –quality exhibits to local museums, historical societies, libraries and community centers that traditionally have limited access to traveling exhibitions due to space and cost limitations.

A portable seven-kiosk, interactive exhibit, New Harmonies offers a look and listen to various genres and styles of phenomenal music birthed only in America with Mississippi, naturally, among the top of the shining stars.

The exhibit, sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., the Mississippi Humanities Council, and the Pearl Public Library, is composed of three dimensional display panels and covers 900 feet of floor space. Exhibit hours will be Mondays – Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

But hold on! The Pearl Public Library is not waiting until July 21 to start the exhibit excitement. The library has teamed up with the Mississippi Braves at Trustmark Park in Pearl for Blues, BBQ and Baseball, Friday – Sunday, July 15 – 17. The gates will open 6 p.m., 5p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively. Acorn, the library mascot will be available for photographs. Come on and hang out with the gang!

To kickoff the opening of the exhibit, a grand opening ribbon cutting will be held at the library Thurs, July 21 at 10 a.m. Live music and refreshments for everyone!

Enthusiastically embracing the musical theme, the Pearl Public Library has planned local exhibits such as Musical Excellence in Pearl High School, a memorabilia travel through decades of Pearl High’s School band and choral programs and Rankin County Stars, a look at famous musicians from Rankin County, that will be featured during the exhibit.

On Sat. July 23, the library is hosting New Harmonies in the Park at the City of Pearl Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be tons of fun, music from local greats as well as rising stars and food. But that’s not all. There will be a Pearl’s Got Talent contest. With a limit of 30 contestants, you must register.

As if that’s not enough, numerous musically themed adult and children’s programs will also coincide with the exhibit during the summer.

Keep Mississippi's Waters Clean

Join us at the Flowood Library on Saturday, May 14th at 10:00 am to hear a special presentation by the Mississippi Wildlife Federation. A representative will discuss the state of Mississippi's waterways and what you can do to ensure that they are kept clean and safe. The Mississippi Adopt-a-Stream project will be explained and refreshments will be served. Learn what you can do to protect the beautiful natural resources in Mississippi.
