Chapter One Book Club @ Pearl
Join us for Chapter One Book Club where we will discuss this month's book, Lowcountry Summer by Dorothea Benton Frank. Full of family dysfunction and southern humor, once you're in it, Cecelia says she couldn't put it down.
Here's the book summary:
"When Caroline Wimbley Levine returned to Tall Pines Plantation, she never expected to make peace with long-buried truths about herself and her family. The Queen of Tall Pines, her late mother, was a force of nature, but now she is gone, leaving Caroline and the rest of the family uncertain of who will take her place.
In the lush South Carolina countryside, old hurts, betrayals, and dark secrets will surface, and a new generation will rise along the banks of the mighty Edisto River.
Wonderfully evocative, infused with humor and poignancy, and rich with the lyrical cadences of the South, Lowcountry Summer is vintage Dorothea Benton Frank, a deeply moving novel you'll want to savor and share."
The meeting is from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, June 14 at the Pearl Library. There will be door prizes and refreshments! We hope to see you there!

We love books! We urge you to read them, enjoy them, learn from them... destroy them! Destroy them? Destroy that old book and make a craft out of it! (Please don't destroy our books; you'll be fined.)
At next week's craft night, we will be making a smaller version of the wreath shown above. And if you haven't already guessed, it's made out of book pages. Don't worry, you won't have to destroy any of your books; we already have some old ones you can use. We will meet from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 12 at the Pearl Library. This program is free with all materials provided and open to the public. We'll see you there!

Brown Bag Lunch @ Pearl
Join us for our Brown Bag Lunch Friday, May 25 @ 12 p.m. where Mississippi author, Forrest L. Cooper, will discuss his book, Looking Back Mississippi: Towns and Places.
For the past three decades, historian and archivist Forrest Lamar Cooper has written a regular column for Mississippi Magazine about unusual, fascinating aspects of the state's history, culture, products, and people. Whether describing the Jubilee Beverage Company of Jackson, the origins of the Mississippi State Fair, a Mississippi veteran who fought at Iwo Jima, or Biloxi's Riviera Hotel, Cooper's "Looking Back" columns are thoroughly researched and written with verve and clarity.
Looking Back Mississippi: Towns and Places collects thirty-nine of Cooper's best essays on the various cities, towns, dwellings, parks, and institutions of historical resonance. Covering all corners of the state, from the mid-1800s to the 1930s, the volume offers an engaging, convivial alternative history of Mississippi, one that emphasizes the obscure and small-scale over the big picture. Each short essay is accompanied by photographic and illustrative postcards from Cooper's private collection.
These postcards and other memorabilia give delightful visual clarity to Cooper's historical accounts of towns as far north as Hernando and as coastal as Pass Christian, from the Delta to the Pine Belt. Cooper focuses on Mississippi places, and the people and events that made them famous. Much of the architecture and even the terrain-as with the Gulf Coast's once legendary orange groves-has disappeared, making Cooper's postcards invaluable resources for understanding and visualizing what no longer exists. Looking Back Mississippi provides a treasure trove of history and insight into long-vanished corners of the state (amazon.com).
Bring a sack lunch. Drinks and desserts provided by the Friends of the Pearl Library. We hope to see you there!

Here's the recipe in case you missed it:
1 (14oz) can sweetened condensed milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
8 oz high quality semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup Nutella, room temperature
3 Tbs butter, room temperature cut up into small pieces
Course sea salt to sprinkle on top
Line 8x8 inch baking pan with parchment paper leaving a couple of inches sticking up on each side (so you can lift the chilled fudge out of the pan).
In the top of a double boiler (you can use a glass bowl on top of a pan with water in the bottom), mix all the ingredients except the sea salt.Your water in the bottom pan should be just below the top pan or glass bowl. Gently simmer the water and stir the mixture until the chocolate chips are melted and the mixture is smooth, about 5-7 minutes.
Scrape the mixture into the lined pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Sprinkle with sea salt and gently press the sea salt down into the fudge so that it won't fall off once the fudge is chilled. Refrigerate until the fudge is firm, at least two hours.
Using the overhanging parchment paper, lift the fudge out of the pan. Cut the fudge into 3/4 inch pieces. Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

"What makes a marriage - love or compatibility? Passion or pragmatism? Shobhan Bantwal's compelling new novel explores the fascinating subject of arranged marriage, as a young Indian-American woman navigates the gulf between desire and tradition…
To Soorya Giri, arranged marriages have always seemed absurd. But while her career as an environmental lawyer has flourished, Soorya is still a virgin, living with her parents in suburban New Jersey. She wants to be married. And she is finally ready to do the unthinkable…
Soorya's first bridal viewings are as awkward as she anticipated. But then she's introduced to Roger Vadepalli. Self-possessed, intelligent, and charming, Roger is clearly interested in marriage and seems eager to clinch the deal. Attracted to him in spite of her mistrust, Soorya is also drawn into a flirtation with Lou, a widowed colleague who is far from her family's idea of an acceptable husband.
In choosing between two very different men, Soorya must reconcile her burgeoning independence and her conservative background. And she must decide what matters most to her - not just in a husband, but in a family, a culture, and a life… "

Homemade Soda?
| Homemade Soda |
Well I've not started my own "lib-blogger bottling" but I did find recipes that sounded great and there weren't too many ingredients or sound like something too difficult. The author, Andrew Schloss, gives recipes for sodas that you would expect to find on most any grocery store shelf--cola, root beer, fruit flavors and then there are those that I'm not sure I would try just because I'm not much of an experimentalist when it comes to sodas. I first saw them listed on the cover--"herbal and healing waters, sparkling teas and coffees, shrubs and switchels, cream sodas and floats, and other carbonated concoctions". I thought, floats are good, anything with ice cream on top. However, someone who does like to experiment with tastes could truly check out this book and have fun with it. Schloss makes it sound easy and fun, and he does explain what shrubs and switchels are!
If you are looking for something different to do for those hot summer days or just want to really be sure of what your family is drinking, check out Homemade Soda, by Andrew Schloss!

Some reviews of Marta's previous performances:
"Especially gripping was Szlubowska's performance of the Sonata for Unaccompanied Violin by the unjustly neglected Grazyna Bacewicz (1909-1960). Its hints of Bartok and neoclassical rigor suited Szlubowska's no-nonsense demeanor well; she held interest from first note to last..."
- The Washington Post
Washington, DC
"Her (Szlubowska's) tender, sweet, highest tones were exceptional. She played with strength and vigor throughout the Tchaikovsky Concerto. The cadenza was especially noteworthy for its wide range of expression and nuance, not to mention the technical feats."
